Behind the Lines: NCAA Tournament Day One

Posted by rtmsf on March 18th, 2009

btl-header

This edition of Behind the Lines is emanating from Las Vegas. The Obsessed With Sports crew will be enjoying the first weekend of the tournament from the sports betting capital of the world.

Thursday, March 19th

The 8 versus 9 games are very close, as they should be.

Butler (9) vs Louisiana State (8) -2.5

Behind The Line: Take a look at the over on this one–it’s at about 127. Butler has consistently been going over numbers in this area while LSU scores a lot more than other Horizon League teams.

Texas A&M (9) vs Brigham Young (8) -2

Behind The Line: Both teams have been very good as far as covering as of late. They are a combined 14-6 in their last 20 games. In this case, the spread might play a more minimal role.

Gonzaga is no stranger to being a double digit favorite.

Akron (13) vs Gonzaga (4) -12.5

Behind The Line: Gonzaga is 7-6 this season when they have been favored by double digits.

Connecticut is also familiar with large spreads.

Chattanooga (16) vs Connecticut (1) -20

Behind The Line: UConn is a misleading 3-7 when they are double digit favorites. I say this because a number of their non-conference games didn’t even have lines because they weer favored by so much. Also playing a large role is the competition in the Big East, against whom the Huskies were still favored by more than 10.

According to Bodog the longest shots to win the whole shebang are Binghamton, Morehead State, Morgan State, Radford, Robert Morris and Chattanooga at 1750:1, respectively.

More from Vegas as the week progresses!

Behind the Lines – Week 6

Posted by rtmsf on January 22nd, 2009

btl-header

Obsessed With Sports will be providing coverage to RTC throughout the season.

Thursday, January 21st

West Virginia at Georgetown (12)

Behind The Line: You might recall that last month and into the beginning of this month WVU was on fire. They covered 5 straight games over this span. However since getting deeper into Big East play, they have gone 2-2.

Purdue (19) at Minnesota (17)

Behind The Line: Minnesota has covered 4 of their last 5 while Purdue is 2-4 in their last 6.

Friday, January 22nd

No notable games.  Go out and get some fresh air… or, of course, wager your money somewhere else.

Saturday, January 23rd

Baylor (21) at Oklahoma (5)

Behind The Line: Oklahama has covered their last 3 against some nice competition while Baylor has dropped 3 of their last 4 against the spread. This one will give one of these two teams an early defining in-conference win.

Connecticut (4) at Notre Dame (13)

Behind The Line: ND has hit a cold streak and has dropped 4 of 5 against the spread. In their last two games UConn failed to cover large spreads @ St. John’s and Seton Hall. The 2 games prior Uconn was able to cover smaller spreads @ WVU and @ Cincinnati.

Northwestern at Michigan (24)

Behind The Line: Northwestern is a giant killer. Still, they have failed to cover in 5 of their last 7. Michigan is ranked and Northwestern is on the road. Hmm.

Sunday, January 24th

Louisville (20) at Syracuse (8)

Behind The Line: The Cardinals have covered 4 straight including a tough road game @ Nova. ‘Cuse has been inconsistent against the spread, going 4-3 in their last 7 games.

Wednesday, January 13th

Temple at Pennsylvania

Behind The Line:  Temple has covered their last 3 games, all coming against lesser competition. On the other side, Penn has failed to cover 4 straight times.

Baylor (21) at Texas A&M

Behind The Line:  The line is going to be very small on this one. Baylor has not covered their last two cakewalks and are just 1-1 on the road. A&M is 10-0 at home and has covered 2 of their last 3. The time they did not cover was in a loss @ Oklahoma St

Thursday, January 14th

Xavier (16) at Rhode Island

Behind The Line:  Xavier has covered 3 games in a row while Rhody has failed to do so in their last 2 attempts. Xavier fares well on the road. Xavier has won @ Cincinatti, @ Virginia and against Memphis on a “neutral” site.

Davidson at Duke(2)

Behind the Line: Similar to the first game, Davidson is not so hot while Duke is scorching. Davidson has dropped 4 straight against the spread and Duke has covered their last 3.

Gonzaga at Tennessee(25)

Behind the Line: Two teams that are not playing their best ball. The Zags have lost 3 straight and the Vols are coming off a loss at Kansas. Tennessee is undefeated at home while Gonzaga is just 1-2 on the road. Both of these teams score a lot of points. Combined, 6 out of their last 9 games have gone to the over.

Wright St. at Butler(20)

Behind the Line: Wright State is 7-7 this season and are 1-5 on the road. However, they have covered their last 4 games against the spread albeit against lesser competition. Butler has covered 4 of their last 5 games. There is a possibility that the line could be friendly due to these occurrences.

Behind the Lines – Week 3

btl-header

Obsessed With Sports will be providing coverage to RTC throughout the season.

Welcome to the Week Three edition of Behind the Lines. On a weekly basis, we will cover the betting lines that stand out from the week that was in college basketball. This week I am going to do something a bit different. I am going to preview the potentially best upcoming games this week including analysis based on recent previous games played.

It is a slow week except for tonight, which is definitely an exception. There are some great games on tap.

Saturday, December 20th

Michigan St(22) at Texas(5)

Behind the line:  This will be Michigan St.’s first big road test. Texas has shown they they will let opponents stick around in games; a dangerous thing to do with Michigan St.

Arizona at UNLV

Behind the line:  UNLV is going to be favored here (a very small favorite), making this a friendly betting line.

Davidson(20) at Purdue(18)

Behind the line: Davidson will be getting a little more than a handful of points on the road. They certainly have the potential to win the game outright. They have proven they can play on the road as they played @Oklahoma and covered.

Connecticut(2) vs Gonzaga(7)

Behind the line: Gonzaga is actually going to be favored. Personally, I think this UConn team is very good and as underrated as a #2 can be. UConn getting points, definitely a friendly line.

Welcome to the Week Two edition of Behind the Lines. On a weekly basis, we will cover the betting lines that stand out from the week that was in college basketball. In general I will stick to the relevant games that the majority of people can relate to. However, if there is an obscure team that scores a big upset or a powerhouse that can cover the spread against a cup cake then you will certainly see it here as well.

As far as format you will see below the day then a heading describing the game to follow. After that this match-up is listed with the point spread and then the final score. Lastly, we have the team who covered and by how much.

Friday 12/5

Perfect line of the night:

Arizona +4 at Texas A&M
Arizona 66, Texas A&M 67
Arizona covers: by 3

Behind the Line: ‘Zona has covered four games in a row. Their two losses this season were still close games with this A&M team and UAB.
