RTC Top 25: Week 10

Posted by rtmsf on January 11th, 2010

How did the Upset Weekend impact our poll this week?  Since so many teams lost, there wasn’t all that much relative movement.  Analysis after the jump…

QnD Analysis.

  • Texas Takes Over #1.  One week after KU regained its stranglehold on the top spot, the Jayhawks lost to short-handed Tennessee in a game where many of their weaknesses were exposed.  They didn’t drop far, though, coming in as a unanimous #3 and highest among the one-loss teams.  Texas looks to hang onto this spot for a little while unless Iowa State has something up its sleeve this week in terms of a major upset.
  • In n’ Out.  This week the pollsters once again knocked four teams out of the poll while adding four newbies.  New Mexico plummeted after its home loss to BYU, dropping from #14 to unranked, while Florida State, Washington and Texas Tech all joined the Lobos on the outside looking in.  They were replaced by #14 Pittsburgh, who followed up last weekend’s win at Syracuse with another road win at Cincinnati, 15-1 Miami (FL), coming off a home win vs. Wake Forest, Clemson, and the 13-1 Baylor Bears
  • Variance.  The team of biggest uncertainty in a fairly static poll this week was by far BYU, who got a huge road win at UTEP even without its star Jimmer Fredette.  Pollsters rated the Cougars between #10 and #25 in this week’s poll.  Other teams that people seemed to have vastly different opinions on this week are #8 Michigan State (range: #5 to #15), #13 Wisconsin (#12 to #20), #16 UConn (#12 to #20), and #22 Georgia Tech (#16 to NR).  Teams making big jumps other than Pittsburgh (+12) this week are #9 Tennessee (+7) and #21 Miami (FL) (+5), while #24 Ole Miss took the biggest plunge from #17 to #24 (-7) after losing at home to #19 Mississippi State.
  • Conference CallBig East (6), ACC (5), SEC (4), Big 12 (4), Big 10 (3), MWC (1), A-10 (1), WCC (1).

How can jstev have Mississippi #22 and Mississippi State not even ranked when MSU just went in to Oxford and beat them? Both teams have very similar profiles and MSU won the head to head matchup. I do think both should be ranked, but MSU has to be higher.

Prolly just an honest mistake. BYU did not play at the Pit this weekend, UNLV did. BYU won on the road @ UTEP. BYU also won at home vs UNLV. New Mexico lost on the road to SDSU and at home vs UNLV.

Yeah, sorry got the UTEP/New Mexico games confused there. Fixed it.
