Buzz: Shocker of Shockers. UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet has decided to continue his newfound SoBe lifestyle by signing with an agent and joining the hordes who will enter the NBA Draft. Sure you don’t want to retire, JC?
Buzz: Out Like Flynn. Word from Syracuse this afternoon is that Syracuse star PG Jonny Flynn will sign with an agent, which means of course that he will no longer have the possibility of returning to Jim Boeheim’s Orange next season. Of course, TNIAM was all over it yesterday. Sorry Cuse fans.
Buzz: Mack Will Take Xavier Job. Following a long-running narrative, in 3-5 years, Mack will be one of the hottest young coaches around as he alights to a name-brand school. Great get for him.
Buzz: Talk About Breaking Ankles. Ty Lawson must be the fastest guard on earth, as it was reported today that not one, but TWO Michigan State guards have broken right feet as a result of Monday night’s game against the Tar Heels. Korie Lucious and Chris Allen will both have surgery on Friday to repair the injuries, and they are expected to fully recover by next season (you know, when Ty Lawson can no longer inflict damage on them).
Buzz: Josh Pastner to Take Memphis Job. After striking out on several ‘big’ names, Memphis announced today that John Calipari’s top assistant coach, Josh Pastner, will take over the head job for the Tigers. He’s only 31 years old, but he spent the previous five seasons prior to this one as an assistant to Lute Olson at Arizona. This is definitely a risk by Memphis in going with such a young, unproven commodity as Pastner, but the word is that he’s an aggressive recruiter, so we’ll see.
Buzz: Portland St.’s Ken Bone to Fill Vacated Wazzu Position. Bone is willing to leave uber-cool Portland for interior Washington to coach in the Pac-10 at Wazzu. He was successful at Portland St., having won the last two Big Sky Tournaments for NCAA appearances, and his roots are in the Pacific Northwest (12 yrs as head coach at Seattle Pacific and 3 yrs as an assistant at Washington).
Buzz: Sean Miller Spurns Arizona. Gary Parrish reports tonight that Xavier’s Sean Miller has spurned Arizona’s advances, which begs the question… what is wrong with this job? First, Tim Floyd turns down the opportunity to go from a football school to a basketball school; now a high mid-major coach has turned down a chance to coach at one of the premier programs of the past quarter-century in a major conference. What gives? Word is now that Arizona is targeting Utah’s Jim Boylen. Stay tuned…
Buzz: Arizona Now Targeting Xavier’s Sean Miller. Various reports are indicating that Arizona has now moved on to Xavier’s Sean Miller as their primary target in their coaching search. Miller would be a great hire for the Wildcats, who were spurned by USC’s Tim Floyd last week. Arguably, he would be a better hire than Floyd would have been.
Buzz: The SEC East Just Got Tougher. Reports from Reno are that Nevada head coach Mark Fox is set to take the open job at Georgia tomorrow. Fox took Nevada to three NCAA Tournaments in his five years at Nevada, but Georgia fans are so far not sure about the hire (an AJC poll shows a 52/48 split on whether it was a good hire). With the additions of Fox and John Calipari at Kentucky, it’s arguable that there is now more coaching talent in the SEC East than most conferences in America (Billy Donovan, Bruce Pearl, Darrin Horn and Kevin Stallings are the others). Throw in Anthony Grant at Alabama and Trent Johnson at LSU and it’s clear that the SEC is serious about making noise on the basketball landscape.
Buzz: Memphis Offers Bruce Pearl $21M over 7 Years. News out of Tennessee is contradictory depending on which end of the state you’re on, but we’re reading that Memphis has targeted Bruce Pearl as the man to keep the uptempo Memphis style moving forward. UT is scrambling to make sure they don’t lose their most talented basketball property.
Buzz: Jamie Dixon Considering the USC Job? On its face, this sounds absurd, but when you learn that Dixon is a North Hollywood kid whose wife is a graduate of USC, this rumor starts to make a little more sense. We’d still be utterly shocked to see this happen, as USC is a football school first, second, and third, but it’s worth mentioning and tracking.
BUZZ: Ernie Kent Retained at Oregon. There’d been some buzz about Ernie Kent getting fired at Oregon so that Gonzaga’s Mark Few could return to his alma mater, but that apparently will be put on hold for another season. Oregon announced today that Kent will be retained, but they will also be bringing on former Arizona assistant Mike Dunlap to help turn the program around.
