Buzz: Memphis Offers Pearl

Buzz: Memphis Offers Bruce Pearl $21M over 7 Years. News out of Tennessee is contradictory depending on which end of the state you’re on, but we’re reading that Memphis has targeted Bruce Pearl as the man to keep the uptempo Memphis style moving forward. UT is scrambling to make sure they don’t lose their most talented basketball property.
Buzz: Jamie Dixon Considering the USC Job? On its face, this sounds absurd, but when you learn that Dixon is a North Hollywood kid whose wife is a graduate of USC, this rumor starts to make a little more sense. We’d still be utterly shocked to see this happen, as USC is a football school first, second, and third, but it’s worth mentioning and tracking.
This is the problem with the media age today and everyone trying to get the first scoop. There is too much information that turns out to be false, such as the Tim Floyd rumors. I can appreciate a good rumor, but I wish outlets would not pass it off as fact until a signature is in place and a presser is scheduled. (no disrespect to you)
JR – no offense taken. Until we develop our own contacts, we’re largely dependent on “mainstream” media sources for our information like this. Our general rule is that we won’t run a rumor until a mainstream source reports it, but as you indicated, they’re getting it wrong more often than not. We may need to re-establish our guidelines as well.
I completely agree and I am placing all of the blame on the major media outlets who race to break news first. I saw the news on ESPN first and came here for analysis after. For me, it’s all about the language they use when reporting these stories. Instead of saying, “Floyd to arizona”, they should report something more along the lines of “A deal is rumored to be in place which will bring Floyd to Arizona”.
I have seen it a hundred times over the past few years with the WWL and others. It’s gotten to the point where I do not believe anything they report until I see the coach moving in to his new office or a player don a new jersey.
