For the last week or so, we’ve been writing up brief descriptions of what to consider on each of the 31 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Tournament. While it’s true that there are 37 other NCAA teams in the field, we’re going to bank on the fact that you already know most of those. This series will help you break down many of the smaller conference teams that you may not have seen play all season (or at most, once). And keep in mind that we’ll be coming hard with analysis on each region Monday and game-by-game breakdowns as well throughout the week. The best time of the year is here, folks — let’s enjoy it!

After an exhilarating Championship Saturday, it’s now Selection Sunday and we’ve eliminated 10 more schools to get down to a total of 78 teams still alive. There are four championship games today — Atlantic 10, ACC, Big Ten, and SEC — all involving teams that are likely hear their names called later tonight (Ole Miss is on the cut line of most bracket projections), so the NCAA Selection Committee will have to decide which of the remaining schools will be among the 10 unlucky names removed from the CoM.

A little more than a day away from Selection Sunday, and there are now only 88 teams left on the Circle of March. With 13 championship games today, there will probably only be around eight more teams removed by Sunday morning, with most of the remaining decision-making belonging to the committee currently sequestered away in Indianapolis.

Huge day on the Circle of March Thursday, as a whole slew of teams were knocked out of contention for the 2013 national championship. What we’re left with are 112 remaining schools on our way to the selection of a final 68 a little over two days from now. As always, we’d like to thank those who are no longer playing for their participation in college basketball this season.

We managed to miss yesterday’s update so consider today a two-fer on the Circle of March. Most of the major conference tournaments are in full swing now, and the last few — the ACC, Atlantic 10, Big Ten and a handful of others — start today. The numbers going into Thursday’s action: We started with 310 teams nine days ago; we’re now down to 160 remaining, which means not only are we roughly halfway home, but a nice, round 150 teams have been eliminated from contention. Over the next four days, of course, we’ll say goodbye to another 92.

Yesterday we ran through the current Vegas odds for four of the major conference tournaments getting under way early in the week. Today we’ll take a brief look at the remainder — the ACC, Atlantic 10, Big Ten, and SEC. The SEC tips off tonight with the rest lacing them up on Thursday afternoon. As usual, there are some disparities between overall public perception and the mathematics that Vegas assigns to these teams — we’ll note some of those differences below (all odds reported from 5dimes.com on Tuesday night).

It’s no surprise that the Gators are a heavy favorite in Nashville this week, but #6 seed Missouri coming in with the next highest odds might be. The Tigers would have to win four games in four days, which is always difficult but not impossible. Vegas has little faith in #3 seed Ole Miss and #4 seed Alabama, as exhibited by their relatively low odds. The bottom line is that this tournament is Florida’s to lose, but after that it’s pretty wide open.

#1 seed Miami (FL) may have won the regular season by a game in the ACC standings, but that doesn’t mean Vegas has to oblige with the notion that the Hurricanes are better than #2 seed Duke. The Blue Devils are a significant favorite over the rest of the field in Greensboro, and the odds realistically only give the top half of this league any kind of a chance. One team to watch is #5 seed NC State, who will have to win four games in four days — Vegas is still relatively high on the Wolfpack despite an incredibly inconsistent season.

The SEC Tournament begins tonight, presumably in front of dozens of people with the #11-#14 seeds in action, but that won’t stop us on the RTC Podcast.
