RTC Live: Murray St @ Morehead St

Posted by jstevrtc on December 4th, 2010

The RTC odyssey continues on Saturday night, and one of the many locales at which we will temporarily alight on this snowy eve will be in the eastern part of the state (or should I say, commonwealth) of Kentucky, a place whose inhabitants take their roundball quite seriously at all levels. Sure, the vibe here is domianted by a couple of leviathan programs just down the road a bit, but tonight’s contest features a couple of “other” Bluegrass schools who are pretty darn proud of the basketball they play, too. Surely you know about Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried (16.9 PPG, 13.0 RPG), one of the country’s best players and a man whose hands attract rebounds through some cosmic blend of hard work and leather magnetism. Murray State (specifically, the graduated Danero Thomas) buzzer-beat Vanderbilt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year and came within two points of erasing eventual finalist Butler two days later, and the Racers have no intentions of missing out on the March fun this year. Every pre-season prognosticator had these two as the best teams in the OVC. The fun in Morehead, Kentucky starts at 8 pm ET and we hope you’ll check it out with us. It might be freezing outside, but we’re happy to be here no matter the weather.

RTC Live: Rider @ Pittsburgh

Posted by rtmsf on December 4th, 2010

Game #57. RTC Live is back in Three Rivers City for another game at Pittsburgh taking on a team that has proven it can win against major conference teams on the road.

Welcome to a chilly day in Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center, one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. Today visiting Rider takes on Pitt in a non-conference matchup that could prove more exciting than it would seem at first glance. Pitt comes into the game with a perfect 7-0 record,  #3 national ranking according to the AP and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, and #3 nationally in rebounds per game and #5 in assists per game. Rider, on the other hand, has a #31 ranking in field goal percentage, but languishes in the other categories of note. Rider took down USC by 20 earlier in the season, but it remains to be seen what the rest of the season will hold for them as they have had a seesaw conference season so far. This will be a huge opportunity for Rider to prove itself against one of the best and deepest teams in the country, and an opportunity for Pitt to continue what has been a relatively smooth preseason as it gears up for the Big East conference season.

RTC Live: Utah State @ Georgetown

Posted by rtmsf on December 3rd, 2010

Game #55.  RTC Live returns to the nation’s capital for a possible trap game for the streaking Hoyas.

While KenPom may be telling you that Washington State over Kansas State is the upset to watch out for, Utah State and Georgetown will absolutely be a game you need to keep an eye on while Kentucky invades Chapel Hill. Stew Morrill runs one of the most consistently underrated programs in the country. Generally, he avoids playing road games against power conference teams without a return game, but after living on the bubble for much of his tenure, Morrill made the decision to schedule the Hoyas. They are an experienced group with some good perimeter defenders. Tai Wesley is a better post player than Ricardo Ratliffe of Missouri, who had 22 points against the Hoyas. And Nate Bendall is back in the lineup, although he is still battling the foot injury that has plagued him this year. Throw in a potential hangover from Georgetown’s thrilling win over Mizzou, and the Aggies seemed primed for an upset.   That said, Georgetown may have the best baskcourt in the country with Austin Freeman, Chris Wright, and Jason Clark. Utah State better make sure they close out long, because those three are all hitting well above 40% from deep.

RTC Live: UCLA @ Kansas

Posted by rtmsf on December 2nd, 2010

Game # 54.  RTC Live enters the Phog Allen Fieldhouse for the first time in a matchup of college basketball bluebloods in Lawrence.

The UCLA Bruins came up short in New York, losing both of their games in the NIT Season Tip-Off. They’ll play their third straight game away from Westwood Thursday night as they travel to the nation’s loudest arena (depending on who you ask) to take on the #4 Kansas Jayhawks. Ben Howland’s team is led by the sophomore tandem of Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt, who account for over 40% of the Bruins’ scoring and rebounding output. The battle for control inside is the most intriguing aspect of this game, with Marcus and Markieff Morris, plus blossoming sophomore Thomas Robinson, all producing efficiently in the early going for the Big 12’s defending champions. In the backcourt, UCLA’s guard play has been decent against weaker teams, but against Villanova, looked outmatched and overwhelmed. KU will look to exploit that weakness as the Wildcats did with speedy guard Tyshawn Taylor. Sporting an assist-turnover rate of 43:17, Taylor can get to the basket, at which point he can dump it off to either twin or kick it out to Tyrel Reed or Brady Morningstar for a three. Join us at 9:00 pm EST for a Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series matchup that promises to be Thursday night’s marquee matchup!

RTC Live: WKU @ Vanderbilt

Posted by rtmsf on December 1st, 2010

Game #53.  RTC Live heads to Nashville for a regional battle between two teams with NCAA hopes this season.

Western Kentucky is stuck in a familiar spot facing a familiar opponent. A year ago, the Hilltoppers picked up a signature win over Vanderbilt on a neutral court in Nashville after coming out of the gates early. WKU’s looking to notch a similar win in Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gymnasium at 8 p.m. CT tonight, as the Toppers enter having lost three of their last four games. But this might be WKU’s toughest test yet. The Commodores, who won two of three games in the same Puerto Rico Tip-Off where WKU lost two of three, dominate with size. Vanderbilt starts three players 6’7 or taller and none shorter than 6’3. Sophomore guard John Jenkins leads Vanderbilt with 19.7 points per game. Juniors Jeffery Taylor and Festus Ezeli each average 11.3 points per game. WKU is headed up by senior forward Juan Pattillo, an Oklahoma transfer who has scored in double figures along with senior forward Steffphon Pettigrew in every one of the Toppers’ six games.  Join us tonight for another great edition of RTC Live.

RTC Live: Butler @ Loyola (Chicago)

Posted by rtmsf on December 1st, 2010

Game #52.  RTC Live heads to Chicago for an early-season tilt between Horizon League foes.  Unbelievably, conference play is already here.

Coming off a shocking loss to Evansville the Butler Bulldogs will open Horizon League play at the Gentile Center in Rogers Park, Chicago against the surprising Loyola (IL) Ramblers. You can catch the game on the Horizon League Network. Loyola is off to a 7-0 start after a narrow escape versus San Francisco on Saturday. Having returned their top seven scorers, the Ramblers have been able to get out of the gate quickly this season – and have played especially well at home. Butler has struggled a bit to replace Gordon Hayward and work some talented new freshman into the rotation and it showed on Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped a 71-68 overtime decision to the Purple Aces. Point guard Ronald Nored missed the game against Evansville due to a head injury he suffered against Siena, and it’s questionable whether he will be able to return for this game. Last season, this matchup went down to the wire with Butler pulling off 48-47 victory only after Loyola missed two shots in its final possession. The Ramblers are a team-oriented outfit with five players scoring in double-figures. Senior Geoff McCammon leads the way with 14.4 points per game. Join John Templon of Chicago College Basketball at 6:45 p.m. CT as we attempt to discover if Loyola has what it takes to be a force in the Horizon League this season, or if Butler will not relinquish the crown without a fight.

RTC Live: Georgetown vs. Missouri

Posted by rtmsf on November 30th, 2010

Game #50.  RTC Live is back at Sprint Center in KC for some BBQ n’ hoops, as Georgetown travels to a semi-road game vs. Missouri.

Exactly one week after last Tuesday’s top five showdown between Duke and Kansas State, RTC Live returns to Sprint Center in Kansas City for another matchup of ranked teams, as the Missouri Tigers square off against Big East contender Georgetown in the John McLendon Classic. Mike Anderson’s team is off to a fast 5-0 start, including wins in Cancun over Wyoming and La Salle, as they get set for this semi-home tilt. The Tigers are an experienced team led by juniors Marcus Denmon and Laurence Bowers, while juco transfer Ricardo Ratliffe has been outstanding on the glass, averaging 9.6 boards a game to go with 10.8 points per contest. The Hoyas will counter with a backcourt attack led by Preseason Big East POY Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. Freeman, at 20.2 points per game, has lived up to the hype and trails only Kemba Walker and Casey Mitchell in scoring in the Big East. John Thompson III’s troops include eight players who average 15 minutes or more per game, proving that he has the depth to keep up with Anderson’s frenzied “40 Minutes of Hell” style. Both teams are hungry to hand the other their first loss of the season, so expect a hard-fought, physical night on the hardwood.

RTC Live: Georgia Tech @ Northwestern

Posted by rtmsf on November 30th, 2010

Game #51.  RTC Live joins in on the ACC/Big Ten Challenge fun with an intriguing game between two teams swinging up this year.

The ACC/Big Ten Challenge continues on ESPN2 with Northwestern vs. Georgia Tech at 7:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. CT. The Wildcats are 4-0, their best start in 17 years, and are taking on a Yellow Jackets team that appears to have turned the corner since losing at Kennesaw State earlier this season. After going 1-1 in the Legends Classic in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with a victory over UTEP and a loss to Syracuse, this should be another test to see how far Paul Hewitt’s squad has come already this season. Georgia Tech also could be Northwestern’s toughest non-conference opponent as the Wildcats attempt to go to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program’s history. There are tons of players to watch from Northwestern’s baby-faced assassin John Shurna, who’s coming off of 23 points against Creighton on Sunday, to Georgia Tech’s famous son, freshman Glen Rice, Jr. Come join John Templon of Chicago College Basketball from Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston starting 15 minutes before tip-off.

RTC Live: FIU @ Marshall

Posted by jstevrtc on November 29th, 2010

Game #49: RTC is again happy to make the acquaintance of a gym in which we’ve never been before — this time, the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia at Marshall University.

We have a Sun Belt vs Conference USA tilt tonight as Isiah Thomas’ Florida International Golden Panthers (4-1) attempt to corral the Thundering Herd of Marshall (3-2). The Herd have a new coach in Tom Herrion and are still attempting to recover from the loss of one-and-done Hassan Whiteside, but sophomore guard DeAndre Kane is doing what he can to soothe that pain (16.0 PPG and 5.0 RPG) and take up some of the work left behind by Hassan, now a Sacramento King. The Panthers, led by junior guard DeJuan Wright’s 14.8 PPG and 8.6 RPG, have already achieved more than half of their total number of wins from last season (7-25) . Both teams feature deep benches, each having nine players who average at least 15 minutes a contest. We expect a sea of green in the Henderson Center for this one and we’ll open the live blog window about 15 minutes before the 7:00 PM ET tipoff. Hope to see you there.

RTC Live: 76 Classic Finals

Posted by rtmsf on November 28th, 2010

Games #46-#47.  It’s been a long week of feast, but we’ll wrap it up in Anaheim with the consolation game and the finals of the 76 Classic.

Coming into Feast Week, UNLV and Virginia Tech had to be the favorites to advance to the 76 Classic Championship game, and when it tips off at 6 PM PST, those are the two teams who will be fighting it out for the title. While Virginia Tech had to finish strong in their semifinal matchup with Oklahoma State to move on, UNLV has advanced through Tulsa and Murray State with solid workmanlike efforts. Both squads will rely on their strong backcourts and defensive pressure, with the matchups between the Running Rebels’ Oscar Bellfield and Tre’Von Willis and the Hokies’ Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney definitely worth keeping an eye on, but it may be the performance of some talented and skilled front court players, namely UNLV’s Chace Stanback and Virginia Tech’s Jeff Allen, that will decide the outcome. We hope you’ll come and join us for what should be a very entertaining matchup in the championship, but you’re welcome to show up early too, as we’ll be keeping an eye on the third-place game between Oklahoma State and Murray State, with both teams hoping to avoid a second loss on the weekend, beginning around 3 PM PST.
