Checking in on the… Mountain West

A couple teams toward the bottom of the Mountain West have had good weeks this week, so we’ll give them some credit as well as looking at a league favorite that is still undefeated.

TCU has gone 2-1 on the week and the Horned Frogs are now 7-4 on the season. In their only loss of the week, a 10-point defeat at Indiana, leading scorer Kevin Langford was limited to 20 minutes with foul trouble. Junior center Zvonko Buljan has picked up the slack, averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds in the team’s last two games.

New Mexico won both of its games this week and the Lobos pushed their record over .500 on the season at 5-4. Leading scorer Tony Danridge has averaged 14.5 points in the team’s two games this week. Also in the mix is guard Chad Toppert, who has averaged 12 points per game this week and is averaging double-digits in scoring off the bench this season.

BYU is still undefeated, winning both of their games this week including a big win over in-state rival Utah State. Forward Jonathan Tavernari was key in the Cougars’ 68-63 win over Utah State with 24 points and nine rebounds. Tavernari is second on the team in scoring with 16.1 points per game this season and leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game in the first month.
