What’s Trending: Threes, Dunks, and Matthew McConaughey

What’s Trending is a column examining the week that was in college basketball social media. Matthew Eisenberg (@matteise) is your weekly host.

Last week began with Syracuse defeating top-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The upset included the Orange’s Tyus Battle scoring 32 points and East Carolina transfer Elijah Hughes adding 20 points of his own. Not all of his buckets were created equally, though, as this shot in the final seconds of the first half came from well beyond the three-point line…

After beating Duke, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim was asked about Blue Devils’ superstar Zion Williamson. Boeheim found it very difficult to describe the precocious freshman, but had a very colorful way to link him to Charles Barkley

After beating Virginia Tech last week, Matt Norlander gave his take on Virginia basketball….

And while Virginia’s defensive prowess is well-known by all, this play from Duke’s Zion Williamson characterized his transcendent abilities. No Tre Jones, no problem, on Saturday night for Duke against the Cavaliers.

This week also featured a few events that we’ve seen throughout the season. First, it was TCU awarding a scholarship to a player with an assist from law enforcement…

It was also Nevada’s Cody Martin delivering a clutch, game-winning three in the dying seconds of a game against Boise State. This shot also happened to be Martin’s first made three-pointer in conference play.

This week’s final minute between Dayton and VCU gave us a shot that will be nearly impossible to replicate….

This week also gave us more of Murray State’s Ja Morant. His week began with a thunderous poster of Eastern Illinois’ Lucas Jones…

…and then it finished with a statistical line that no one else has accomplished in the last 20 years of college basketball.

This week featured more buzzer-beater finishes. North Alabama’s Christian Agnew used the glass to beat Stetson…

It also featured this authoritative slam dunk by Arizona State’s Zylan Cheatham. A dunk that is only made better given the excitement of Bill Walton…

And finally, this week featured a familiar face hanging out on the sidelines of the Texas vs. Oklahoma game. With the Longhorns coming out on top, it’s safe to say Shaka Smart was more than, “alright, alright, alright” with the visit from Matthew McConaughey.
