What’s Trending: A First Win, a Major Upset & Plenty of Highlight Moments

What’s Trending is a column examining the week that was in college basketball social media. Matthew Eisenberg (@matteise) is your weekly host.

This season marks the first year of Division I competition for Cal Baptist and North Alabama. Down a pair in the closing seconds last week against Oral Roberts, the Lancers walked away a winner after this miraculous half-court shot dropped in.

On the topic of a big-time shot from a particular spot on the court, Villanova head coach Jay Wright gave Andy Katz a tour of the remodeled Finneran Pavilion, including his first look at the Final Four floor Villanova brought in with the spot of Kris Jenkins‘ game-winner memorialized forever.

After James Akinjo led Georgetown to a nice win over Illinois, Hoyas’ head coach Patrick Ewing had a tongue slip when it came to describing the “ONIONS!” of his player’s performance…

In terms of streaks, Michigan‘s dismantling of Villanova snapped a streak that was worthy of a double-take or two.

In this week’s portion of “What Did Zion Williamson Do Now?” I present this dunk against Eastern Michigan.

Zion had a jaw-dropping moment two weeks ago in his debut against Kentucky — a blocked shot followed by leading the fast break and finishing it off with a perfect bounce pass. Fellow Oregon freshman Bol Bol had an equally impressive stretch with this sequence last week against Iowa.

Oregon‘s season long highlight reel will include this dunk from the next night against Syracuse, courtesy of Kenny Wooten

What Zion is to dunking, West Virginia center Sagaba Konate is to shot-blocking. Knowing that fact makes this dunk by Josh Anderson of Western Kentucky even more impressive.

Furman’s week started with an overtime win against Gardner-Webb and was followed up Thursday with Jordan Lyons making 15 three-pointers against North Greenville…

and then of course the Purple Paladins’ week got even more exciting with an upset win at Villanova.

In terms of the best moment of the week, John Paul Jones Arena erupted after team manager Grant Kersey made his free three-pointer.
