What’s Trending: Back Into the Thick of Things

What’s Trending is a column examining the week that was in college basketball social media. Griffin Wong (@griffwong90) is your weekly host.

Oregon State Be Trippin’

No, but literally. Moments after making an great steal and jumping on the loose ball, senior Jarmal Reid tripped the referee as he was getting up. An absolutely bizarre moment that turned a tied game into a Utah victory. Cue the puns…

As stated in the final tweet, Reid has been suspended for a minimum of four games.

Sparty Noooooo

What a week it has been for Michigan State. While they looked like (and perhaps were) the best team in the nation as recently as a month ago, the Spartans have taken a tumble, losing three in a row, including a beatdown at home against Iowa and an awful home loss to Nebraska.

They say that one is an incident, two is a coincidence, and three is a pattern. But can the Spartans avoid four, a trend? Things don’t get easier with Maryland coming to town on Saturday, but with the first College Gameday of the basketball season coming to East Lansing, you know there will be urgency in the Breslin Center.

Coach K Hits the Showers Early

Duke is another traditional power that has lost three in a row, the last one coming in heart-breaking fashion against Syracuse with a controversial no-call coming at the end of the game. Coach K was furious, and even skipped half the handshake line after the final buzzer sounded.

And here he is after the game explaining the call.

Some are upset, some are saying “no big deal,” but it’s not surprising he made headlines, that’s for sure.

Heartbreaking/-warming Story For the Colorado State Community

Junior forward Emmanuel Omogbo suffered as no person should, losing both of his parents and two family members in a house fire this past Tuesday. Shortly after, the Colorado State athletic department set up a GoFundMe account to help out the Omogbo Family, and has raised over $35,000 (and counting) for the family in less than 24 hours. You always love to hear about stories like this.

Quick-Hitters

-Louisville guard Donovan Mitchell can get up!

-How about a one-handed ‘oop? Syracuse forward Tyler Roberson does the honors:

-Indiana’s freak-athlete Troy Williams showing he’s a match-up nightmare on both sides of the court:

-It’s all fun and games until the backboard breaks! Check out Virginia recruit Chance Greene with the reverse slam:

-Michigan State’s Eron Harris with the nice baseline drive and dunk. The Spartans could have used some more of that, as they got blown out by Iowa 76-59.

-Fresno State senior Cezar Guerrero with the Ray Allen-like (think 2013 Finals, Game 6) shot to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately for Guerrero, his team couldn’t get it done, San Diego State triumphed 73-67 in overtime.

-Would it really be a What’s Trending if we didn’t share a crazy, non-D1 buzzer beater? Lewis University’s Max Strus, everybody!
