Knight to WKU?

Yes, it’s April Fools’ Day, and yes, our sources are only message board chatter, but thankfully we’re not beholden to the same journalistic standards as our forebears, so we can actually give thoughtful consideration to this wild idea.

Is Bob Knight currently in talks with Western Kentucky to become the next head coach of the Hilltoppers? If the chatter is true, Knight wants to coach a mid-major with a solid fanbase, and WKU would certainly fit that bill.

Hmmm…..

In other coaching news, Andy Katz is reporting that Indiana will hire Tom Crean from Marquette as the next head man for the Hoosiers. You better hope there’s another Dwyane Wade in the pipeline for Crean there, Hoosier fans (Crean has a 1-3 NCAA record w/o D-Wade; 4-2 with).

Update: nearly 36 hrs after posting, this rumor of Knight going to WKU has yet to die. There’s still not much coming out of the MSM, but the message board chatter refuses to give up on the assertion that Knight met with WKU officials in Bowling Green, Ky, last night. Stay tuned to this one.

Update #2:  Finally debunked here.  But the rumor had legs, that’s for sure!

  • I think rtmsf did a pretty good job prefacing the inherent weakness in the source in his first sentence/paragraph:

"Yes, it’s April Fools’ Day, and yes, our sources are only message board chatter, but thankfully we’re not beholden to the same journalistic standards as our forebears, so we can actually give thoughtful consideration to this wild idea."

  • I totally dismissed the early reports on this. However, this morning info is flowing in that seems to confirm the idea. Big donors are being called on to pony up money; reports are that he is flying in to meet with WKU officials.

  • I've got some inside news on this deal, WKU officials had Bobby Knight flown in last night (4/1/08) for a meeting concerning the coaching job. From what I am hearing, Knight is not too worried about the salary of his next job, but he does want to make sure he ALWAYS has plenty of money set aside for recruiting! That may or may not be a problem. All I know is that WKU wants to get their basketball team going and become a regular in the tournement, then they need to find a way to get the funds to get a coach and make him happy no matter what it takes. They could have surely found some way to keep Horn here, but hopefully, we will get Bobby Knight and end up better off anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is plane landed at 6:30 this morning. i hate how everyone is saying wku doesnt have enough money to pay him. think about it, he has all the money in the world he doesnt care about a salary he just wants to do what he loves doing and what hes good at. all he is interested in is having a private plane for the team to travel on and also he wants a membership to olde stone country club, the all-time best country club in this part of the country. so bob knight i hope you decide to come along and support the hilltoppers we would love to have you on board.

other possibilities for coaches would be scott cherry, current assistant coach under darrin horn. he played for north carolina and won them a national championship in 1993. ken mcdonald is texas' assistant coach. he was dennis felton's assistant coach at wku several years back and is supposedly dying to get back in bowling green.

WHATEVER HAPPENS, HAPPENS...IT'S ALWAYS GO TOPS!!!!!

  • One thing we never thought we'd EVER talk about on this blog was Scott Cherry, the former screener extraordinaire from UNC in the early 90s.

Toppergirl - you may be too young to know this, so we forgive you, but Scott Cherry "won" UNC a championship about as much as Dan Werner won one for Florida last year.

  • I have a colleague who works with alot of the Men's basketball team players and he told me today that Knight actually came into town last night and met with individuals from Houchen's Industries, Ransdell, and the AD. He also stated that the they were talking to a UCLA coach from several years back (Lavin). He also stated we should here an announcement by Friday!

  • Say it isn't so. I have watched that idiot since he was a snot nosed freshman at Ohio State. His big mouth and hot temper kept him on the bench much of the time. When the family watched the games, we all betted on how long it would take him to foul out.

I realize that he has had an amazing coaching record, behavior not withstanding. On the other hand, I hope Western will chose a coach with more class. As a role model, the guy is a loser.
