From major turnarounds to borderline miracles, let’s take a look at some of this season’s best coaching jobs across the mid-major landscape.

Joe Pasternack — UC Santa Barbara. It’s difficult to overstate just how quickly Pasternack has turned things around at UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos were 6-22 last season — finishing dead last in the Big West — under longtime head coach Bob Williams. Their offense was especially bad, ranking 343rd nationally in efficiency and 350th (second-to-last) in effective field goal percentage. Williams [...]]]>

WAC Tournament

Dates: March 12-14

What to expect: The talent gap between New Mexico State and the rest of the conference is substantial, a reality which the final standings confirmed; Marvin Menzies’ team cruised to a 12-1 WAC record and won the league by four games. To call New Mexico State the class of the WAC would probably be an understatement; Marvin Menzies’ team ranks 162 spots higher in KenPom than its next best colleague and possesses visibly superior size and athleticism. In 2013-14, the Aggies demonstrated their ability to essentially sleepwalk through conference play and then out-talent the rest of the league (a shell of its former self) when it matters most, in March. In fact, they have now reached the NCAA Tournament three seasons in a row — last year taking San Diego State to overtime in the Round of 64 — and the story should be much the same [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/29/new-mexico-state-could-wind-up-a-scary-16-seed-in-march/feed/ 0 Top of the O26 Class: Big Sky, Big West, Mountain West, WAC & WCC http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/10/top-of-the-o26-class-big-sky-big-west-mountain-west-wac-wcc/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/10/top-of-the-o26-class-big-sky-big-west-mountain-west-wac-wcc/#respond Mon, 10 Nov 2014 23:55:11 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=105844

Life is not easy on the road in the Mountain West. The conference’s newest member has quickly learned the harsh reality of a league notorious for protecting its home courts, as Utah State dropped its fourth league road game in as many tries Wednesday night, falling 62-42 at UNLV.
