Three Key Takeaways.

Kansas State swarmed Jairus Lyles and held off history-making UMBC.(Kenneth K. Lam/Baltimore Sun)

UMBC couldn’t follow-up Friday’s unbelievable performance just two nights later. Everything went right for the Retrievers in their historic upset of #1 Virginia on Friday evening. They shot the lights out from deep (12-of-24 three-pointers) and had great ball movement (16 assists on 26 made field goals) against the Cavaliers, but UMBC’s offense came back to earth this evening against Kansas State — the Retrievers only [...]]]>

UMBC’s jubilation was one for the ages after becoming the first #16-seed to knock off a #1-seed in NCAA history. (Bob Donnan/USA TODAY Sports)

History has been made! Not only did UMBC pull off the biggest upset ever in the Big Dance, it did so handily. Let’s review the most likely upset scenarios on each of the seed lines of #12 through #16 this year.

#12 Seed: New Mexico State over Clemson. All four #12 seeds are dangerous this year and it wouldn’t be surprising if any one (or several) pulls off an upset. But if you’re only taking one — and there almost certainly will be at least one — roll with New Mexico State. For starters, the Aggies feature uncommon length and athleticism for a mid-major program, meaning they shouldn’t be at a physical disadvantage against Clemson. Next, the combination of rebounding machine Jemerrio Jones (13.2 [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2018/03/15/the-most-likely-giant-killer-on-each-seed-line-12-16/feed/ 0 2012-13 RTC Conference Primers: America East Conference http://rushthecourt.net/2012/10/22/2012-13-rtc-conference-primers-america-east-conference/ http://rushthecourt.net/2012/10/22/2012-13-rtc-conference-primers-america-east-conference/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2012 19:17:55 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=76088

The NCAA this week released its annual financial report on on the spending patterns of its member institutions’ athletic departments, and the results, while not groundbreaking, are certainly interesting. The report (found in its entirety here) deals in aggregate numbers — meaning individual schools are not named — but the data from 2011 is still valuable. For example, among FBS (I-A) schools, the median revenue for a basketball program approached $5 million with profits of $812,000. By comparison, football programs created over $15 million of revenue with profits of around $3.5 million each. Because every other collegiate program [...]]]>

The top four seeds in the America East have been dominating conference play all season. That’s why they’re expected to meet up in the semifinals. The team that could potentially crash the party is six-seed Hartford, which is playing close to home.
