Most every high school star and prominent AAU recruit dreams of the traditional ascent to the professional ranks. That typically includes playing for a shoe-sponsored AAU team, getting recruited at the highest level, and ending up at a powerhouse program before their name is called at the NBA Draft. However, as history shows us, only a small fraction of these players make the big time, and often it can be some of those who were least expected to do so. For some prominent collegiate stars, there might be a number of road bumps and bouts with adversity standing in the way of [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/15/an-unexpected-detour-for-pj-hairston-on-his-way-to-the-nba/feed/ 0 The ACC Fan’s Guide to French Basketball http://rushthecourt.net/2011/10/05/the-acc-fans-guide-to-french-basketball/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/10/05/the-acc-fans-guide-to-french-basketball/#respond Wed, 05 Oct 2011 23:17:18 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=41270

The lack of basketball being played right now is upsetting, and though Midnight Madness draws near, the gap between that and actual games is still disconcerting. To add even more heartache, NBA labor talks broke down yesterday making the possibility of at least some professional games soon less likely. The San Antonio Spurs’ French star Tony Parker showed his lack of confidence in the labor process by signing with the French team ASVEL recently. Things are not looking good for basketball fans who want to see their favorite players in action. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so without further [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/10/05/the-acc-fans-guide-to-french-basketball/feed/ 0 Boom Goes the Dynamite: 02.15.09 http://rushthecourt.net/2009/02/15/boom-goes-the-dynamite/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/02/15/boom-goes-the-dynamite/#respond Sun, 15 Feb 2009 18:06:34 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=4762

Welcome back to another edition of Boom Goes the Dynamite. I’m back as your semi-regular host after a day off with John Stevens covering for me. Today is a kind of weird day of basketball with the best games later in the day going head-to-head against the NBA All-Star game. So hopefully everyone will be sticking with us throughout the day and the real basketball fans (the ones who actually like defense and competition) will stay with us into the night.

Game of the Day. #7 Washington St. 51, #18 Gonzaga 47. How fun would it be to watch a game at the Kennel? It wasn’t too much fun for the Gonzaga fans tonight as they watched their Zags lose for only the second time in that building and in the process, score their lowest total of points in almost eleven years. Although the stats would lead someone to believe that this was an ugly game, we didn’t really see it that way. There were enough bricks on [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/12/05/atb-northwest-passage/feed/ 5 ATB: Mon/Tues Night Wrapup http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/28/atb-montues-night-wrapup/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/28/atb-montues-night-wrapup/#respond Thu, 29 Nov 2007 04:41:26 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/28/atb-montues-night-wrapup/

Detroit Sucks. Monday was an extremely light night, with no ranked teams playing (not that we could see it anyway amidst our hand-to-hand mouth combat with feral dogs and a thermostat that randomly alternated between blistering and frostbite conditions) . There were a couple of interesting games on the board, however, and the one that caught our attention the most was the early SoCon showdown between Davidson and Appalachian St. Why they’re playing in November, we have no idea, but if Davidson were to lose any conference games this year, we figured [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/28/atb-montues-night-wrapup/feed/ 0 ATB: Pac-10 It In Saturday http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/18/atb-pac-10-it-in-saturday/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/18/atb-pac-10-it-in-saturday/#comments Sun, 18 Nov 2007 06:28:46 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/18/atb-pac-10-it-in-saturday/

Story of the Day. Siena 79, Stanford 67. We should have known better. Really, we should have. As soon as we started thinking that Stanford was a legit power again, given the way they mowed through their first four opponents with ease (without Brook Lopez, remember), they go and drop a game at Siena. For chrissakes, we even put the Cardinal #12 in our latest blogpoll ballot. This continues a disturbing trend of Trent Johnson teams to inexplicably drop ugly pre-conference games to a mid-major [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/18/atb-pac-10-it-in-saturday/feed/ 1 Beach Blanket Hurricane http://rushthecourt.net/2007/10/18/beach-blanket-hurricane/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/10/18/beach-blanket-hurricane/#comments Thu, 18 Oct 2007 15:23:37 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/10/18/beach-blanket-hurricane/

The ACC likes to tout itself as the best basketball conference year after year, much to the annoyance of fans everywhere else.  While the merits of that stance is arguable (ahem, 2007), one thing that is not is that on balance the ACC is the most passionate conference about its hoops.  The history and culture of a league that has identified predominantly with roundball for over fifty years has created rabid fanbases from College Park to Atlanta that make home court advantage really mean something.

With expansion of the ACC from its base in the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic to [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/10/18/beach-blanket-hurricane/feed/ 1 Oden Even More of a Beast than Originally Thought http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/04/oden-even-more-of-a-beast-than-originally-thought/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/04/oden-even-more-of-a-beast-than-originally-thought/#respond Mon, 04 Jun 2007 20:15:55 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/04/oden-even-more-of-a-beast-than-originally-thought/

Somewhat lost amidst all the Billy Donovan and Lebron talk in the hoops world this weekend were reports from the NBA’s predraft camp, coincidentally also held in Orlando.  We’ll get to who helped and hurt themselves in a minute, but we have to first mention that Greg Oden is apparently a gazelle trapped in a seven-footer’s body.  Consider this report from the Portland Oregonian:

Oden is faster than Durant in the 3/4-court sprint, quicker in the lane-agility drill, and has better numbers in the running and standing vertical leaps. And, Oden has a mind-boggling 7.8 body-fat percentage … most big men are north [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/04/oden-even-more-of-a-beast-than-originally-thought/feed/ 0 04.24.07 Fast Breaks http://rushthecourt.net/2007/04/24/042407-fast-breaks/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/04/24/042407-fast-breaks/#respond Wed, 25 Apr 2007 03:43:28 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/04/24/042407-fast-breaks/ Another 1-and-done: Georgia Tech’s Thaddeus Young is going pro, but will not sign with an agent.
