Championship Fortnight got under way last night as the Atlantic Sun, Horizon League and Patriot League tipped off their postseason tournaments. Seven more teams were eliminated from contention for the 2015 National Championship, with Army, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Loyola (Maryland), Stetson, Wright State and Youngstown State riding off into the basketball sunset. Those three conferences will take a break tonight, but the starts of the America East, Big South, Northeast and Ohio Valley Tournaments will keep us engaged as another group of eliminations are scheduled. As of this morning, there are still 320 schools eligible for the ring. Conference Tourneys.  Given the propensity of conference tournaments this weekend, we’ve divided up the ATB this weekend so that this post will cover only the eleven mid-major tourneys that were in action today, while our other ATB post will discuss the end of the regular season for the major conferences.

Missouri Valley Championship – Northern Iowa 67, Wichita State 52.  When Northern Iowa held Drake without a field goal for 28 minutes during their quarterfinal matchup on Friday, many people on press row who were unfamiliar with their stingy defense dismissed it as a statistical anomaly made [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/03/08/atb-mid-major-tourney-sunday/feed/ 0 Thus Begins Championship Fortnight… http://rushthecourt.net/2010/03/02/thus-begins-championship-fortnight/ http://rushthecourt.net/2010/03/02/thus-begins-championship-fortnight/#respond Tue, 02 Mar 2010 10:18:09 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=18599

You know why we don’t need NCAA Tournament expansion to 96 teams?  The are a lot of other good reasons, but the simplest reason is that we already have it.  In fact, about 300 of the 347 Division I teams have an opportunity starting tonight to ‘play their way into’ the NCAA Tournament.  It’s easy — survive and advance.  As long as you win, you’re still alive.  And if you win three or four games in (mostly) consecutive days, you’ll see Greg Gumbel reading your name off the Big Board on Selection Sunday.  Keep winning beyond that and [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/03/02/thus-begins-championship-fortnight/feed/ 0 A Brief Conference Primer Interlude… http://rushthecourt.net/2008/10/30/a-brief-conference-primer-interlude/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/10/30/a-brief-conference-primer-interlude/#respond Thu, 30 Oct 2008 22:43:31 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=1965

We’ve made it through eighteen of our thirty-one season conference primers so far, and our correspondents continue to top each other with their breadth of knowledge and coverage of the one-bid leagues.  So we want to thank them and once again highlight their fantastic work over the past few weeks by anchoring their primers in one post here, so that you (and we) can easily access them.  Going forward, we’ll primarily be dealing with the traditional multiple-bid conferences or conferences that should expect to see multiple bids this season.  Conference #13 will go up tonight, and we’ll be counting down to tipoff [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/10/30/a-brief-conference-primer-interlude/feed/ 0 Conference Primers: Single Bid Conference Recap http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/07/conference-primers-single-bid-conference-recap/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/07/conference-primers-single-bid-conference-recap/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2007 21:20:14 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/07/conference-primers-single-bid-conference-recap/

So we figure we’ll be done with these conference primers by Christmas 2008 Thanksgiving, which is about the time most people start keeping an eye on college hoops anyway.  In the meantime, we thought we’d take a moment to recap the seventeen single bid conferences we’ve already reviewed.  Keep in mind, our definition of a single bid league is a conference that does not regularly compete for multiple NCAA bids (even if they occasionally get multiple bids).
