In the next three weeks leading up to season tipoff, the Pac-12 microsite will be evaluating each of the league’s 12 teams. Today’s stop: Westwood.

UCLA Bruins

Steve Alford has been in Westwood for two seasons now and he’s got consecutive Sweet Sixteens under his belt. For the first time in his tenure, he’s got a complete roster that is balanced between the frontcourt and the backcourt. And he’s got the makings of terrific recruiting classes started for the next two seasons. And yet, somehow, if you were to listen to certain segments of the notoriously tough UCLA fan base, you would [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/11/05/ucla-preview-low-ceiling-high-floor/feed/ 0 Separating Fact From Fiction in UCLA’s Five-Game Slide http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/08/separating-fact-from-fiction-in-uclas-five-game-slide/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/08/separating-fact-from-fiction-in-uclas-five-game-slide/#respond Thu, 08 Jan 2015 22:21:15 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=107162

I touched on the disaster that is UCLA basketball this season in Tuesday’s quick spin around the conference. And, the thing is, so did just about every writer either interested in UCLA, the Pac-12 or — given that UCLA is one of our sports’ blue-blood programs — college basketball on a national level. Having listened to everyone else’s takes, there’s plenty to agree with and plenty to disagree with. Below we’ll take a look at some of these takes and try to determine their relative truthiness, ranking each statement on a scale of 1 – completely false – to 10 – right on the money.

The offseason in Westwood could have gone better — much better. The Bruins knew they were going to be woefully thin in the backcourt, and head coach Steve Alford was never going to completely replace point-forward Kyle Anderson, the 6’9” match-up nightmare with elite point guard skills. But then UCLA received word that Colorado State transfer Jon Octeus had been denied admission, nixing the Bruins’ best-laid plans to make him the starting point guard. There’s just not much depth available here at all, and this clearly puts additional pressure on the Bruins’ starters (although senior Norman Powell should have little issue so long as he remains in good health). Off the bench, UCLA [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/05/uclas-most-important-player-isaac-hamilton/feed/ 1 Pac-12 Season Preview: UCLA Bruins http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/03/pac-12-season-previews-ucla-bruins/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/03/pac-12-season-previews-ucla-bruins/#respond Mon, 03 Nov 2014 19:31:03 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=105645

Throughout the preseason, the Pac-12 microsite will preview each of the league’s 10 teams, from worst to first. Today: UCLA.

UCLA Bruins

Strengths. There’s plenty of talent here, no doubt. Norman Powell, Bryce Alford and Tony Parker return as players who earned at least 40 percent of the team’s minutes last year and were all highly efficient offensive players on a high-powered offensive squad. They’ll be joined by freshmen Kevon Looney and Isaac Hamilton, both of whom are highly-regarded recruits expected to slip seamlessly into the starting lineup. Throw in guys like Wannah Bail and Noah Allen, who played bit parts efficiently last year, and [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/03/pac-12-season-previews-ucla-bruins/feed/ 0 Pac-12 M5: 11.19.13 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2013/11/19/pac-12-m5-11-19-13-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2013/11/19/pac-12-m5-11-19-13-edition/#respond Tue, 19 Nov 2013 18:45:27 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=100407

Utah is off to a 2-0 start with an average margin of victory of 59 points. As you would suspect, the quality of competition hasn’t been stellar so far. And as Mike Sorensen of Deseret News notes, it’s perfectly fine for a program that is working its way back from the depths of a 2011-12 season when the Utes lost 25 out of 31 games, to schedule down a bit. But with six Division I schools in the state of Utah, the only one the Utes will face this year is BYU. Going forward, why not sub out some of [...]]]>

We continue unveiling our team-by-team breakdowns, in roughly the reverse order of where we expect these teams to finish in the conference standings.

UCLA Bruins

Strengths. There is a lot of pure talent on this UCLA roster. Seven players on this roster were considered four-star recruits or better coming out of high school. Two of them – Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams – are expected to have NBA futures, possibly as soon as the next season. And the departures of Shabazz Muhammad and Ben Howland are expected to significantly improve team chemistry around the program. This Bruin roster may be slightly less talented [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/11/05/pac-12-team-preview-ucla-bruins/feed/ 0 UCLA Post-Mortem http://rushthecourt.net/2013/04/15/ucla-post-mortem/ http://rushthecourt.net/2013/04/15/ucla-post-mortem/#respond Mon, 15 Apr 2013 21:01:38 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=96533

Now that we are officially in the offseason, it’s time to take a look back and evaluate each team’s 2012-13 performance. Next on our list: UCLA.

What Went Right

All things considered, a lot of things went right for the Bruins this year. Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson were cleared of their eligibility concerns early and both played (mostly) a full season. Ben Howland made the decision to play to his team’s strengths and emphasized an up-tempo offense-first style. Larry Drew II made the most of his lone season in Westwood and ended his college career on a very positive note. And [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/04/15/ucla-post-mortem/feed/ 0 Who’s Got Next? Pac-12 basketball exhibition games are generally meaningless affairs where a big school beats up on an overmatched foe while the former’s head coach tinkers around with different lineups and different styles. Usually the Pac-12 team wins going away and no one loses too much sleep about the result one way or the other. Still, valuable information can be gleaned from some of these games: Which returnee has made the biggest strides, which of the newcomers can make an impact early in their careers, and who is getting passed up for playing time? For Arizona, with three new and talented freshman big [...]]]>
