While Virginia’s victory at Duke last Saturday afternoon deservedly dominated conference headlines, NC State was busy continuing its underpublicized midseason renaissance just nine miles down the road in Chapel Hill. The Wolfpack, winners of five of their last seven games, now own an NCAA Tournament resume that boasts equity in a trio of quality wins (Arizona on a neutral court; Duke at home; North Carolina on the road) that few bubble teams will approach.

Conference season is underway and this weekend does not lack for intriguing action around the ACC. Duke looks to show it can win on the road; Miami hopes to bounce back; and there’s a heavyweight match-up to consider in Charlottesville. After a relatively successful aggregate performance during the Feast Week tournaments, the ACC turned in another disappointing result in last week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, failing to win the inter-conference event for the seventh consecutive year. It wasn’t all bad last week, though, as North Carolina secured an elite home win against #2 Maryland, and Miami showed some resiliency in responding to its disappointing loss to Northeastern with an overtime win at Nebraska. This week’s Stock Watch zeroes in on a pair of players critical to the fates of two of the league favorites, a school navigating the rest of the non-conference season without its leader and a unit [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/12/07/acc-stock-watch-post-challenge-edition/feed/ 0 N.C. Coming into the 2014-15 season, N.C. State’s biggest issue was to replace the scoring of T.J. Warren, last year’s ACC Player of the Year. With four games now under their belt, the Wolfpack are starting to give us some clues as to how they are going to try and compensate for the almost 25 points per game that Warren put up last year. A look at how Mark Gottfried and the N.C. State administration set up this season’s early schedule reveals a distinct plan of starting cautiously but challenging this young team afterwards. The first three contests were all against teams not in [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/24/n-c-state-learning-to-live-without-t-j-warren/feed/ 0 ACC M5: 11.19.14 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/19/acc-m5-11-19-14-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/19/acc-m5-11-19-14-edition/#respond Wed, 19 Nov 2014 13:31:02 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=106175

Syracuse.com: It is well-known that the Syracuse basketball and football programs have been under NCAA scrutiny for a while now. Other than eligibility concerns surrounding Fab Melo, though, there hasn’t been much information about what the alleged transgressions were. Recent news of a link between a YMCA in Oneida and Orange athletes has brought to light some of the other issues the school is contending with. Questions are being asked about internship programs that athletes supposedly completed at the Y, administered by graduate students. Additionally, a former supervisor at this YMCA was sued for siphoning money from the organization into a private account. That supervisor, Jeff Cornish, had no previous ties to Syracuse [...]]]>

Can Cat Barber run this team effectively?

NC State made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in a row last season as head coach Mark Gottfried cajoled his team to a surprising 22-14 record. The Wolfpack were immensely reliant on ACC Player of the Year T.J. Warren to get there, as he accounted for 34 percent of the team’s scoring and 32 percent of its shot attempts. The ACC has struggled as a whole to live up to its self-proclaimed billing as the best basketball conference of all-time. It can’t even lay a claim to the best conference currently, as it came out with a tie in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, an event in which three of the ACC’s worst teams weren’t invited. However, the talent in the ACC is deep and it remains an exciting conference from top to bottom. Part of the reason for that is the emergence of new and exciting young players across the league, tantalizing casual fans with skills usually reserved for [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/11/a-closer-look-at-the-accs-early-impact-freshmen/feed/ 0 New Starting Lineup Working for NC State http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/09/new-starting-lineup-working-for-nc-state/ http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/09/new-starting-lineup-working-for-nc-state/#respond Mon, 09 Dec 2013 19:05:25 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=101011

Although it’s still very early, NC State is showing signs that this may not be quite the down year many were predicting. After a lackluster 2-2 start to the season, head coach Mark Gottfried made some major lineup changes that are starting to pay big dividends during a four-game winning streak. The most obvious change is the return of seven-foot center Jordan Vandenberg, who missed the first four games due to an injured ankle, but he’s not the only newcomer to the starting lineup. Although all five opening game starters are now healthy, three of those players are coming off [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/09/new-starting-lineup-working-for-nc-state/feed/ 0 Pac-12 M5: 04.04.13 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2013/04/04/pac-12-m5-04-04-13-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2013/04/04/pac-12-m5-04-04-13-edition/#respond Thu, 04 Apr 2013 15:01:59 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=96204
