Happy Fiscal New Year, everyone!

Along with the turn of the fiscal calendar, July 1 also represents the turn of the academic calendar.  This is particularly appropriate for hoopheads, as the NBA’s season has ended and the draft madness that dominated bandwidth for the last two months after the Mario Miracle has died down to a whimper (well, there’s always 2009, right?).  All there really is to look forward to until October is the Ego Known as Kobe Bryant’s attempt to restore American hegemony in the international (read: Olympics) hoops realm.  That comes in August.

So now is as good a time as any [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/07/01/2008-one-and-dones-was-it-worth-it/feed/ 4 2008 NBA Draft Live Blog http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/26/2008-nba-draft-live-blog/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/26/2008-nba-draft-live-blog/#comments Thu, 26 Jun 2008 21:36:39 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=1011

Well this is sort of unplanned, but rtmsf asked me to do this and I’ve got nothing else to do tonight so I figured I would throw up a live blog of the events.

7:30 PM: Everybody’s favorite commissioner/megalomanic David Stern walks to the stage. Pretty weak response from the crowd. Minimal booing and almost no response to a mention of the WNBA. I think Isiah and Dolan have broken the New York fans.

7:38 PM: Stern announces the Bulls’ selection of Derrick Rose. Kind of anti-climatic, but surprising how quickly the consensus swung from Michael Beasley to Rose in such a [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/26/2008-nba-draft-live-blog/feed/ 2 NBA Draft Preview Version 1.0 http://rushthecourt.net/2008/05/19/nba-draft-preview-version-10/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/05/19/nba-draft-preview-version-10/#respond Mon, 19 May 2008 14:38:12 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=876

Lost in the huge O.J. Mayo scandal and the smaller Darrell Arthur scandal is the upcoming NBA Draft, which is a little over 1 month away. Unlike last year, where there was a ton of hype regarding the Draft Lottery (Note: This may have just been because I live in Boston), the day has snuck up on us. I just noticed that it would be happening on May 20th in contrast to last year where I had the time of the lottery programmed into my Treo by mid-March (thanks to an 18-game losing streak). Teams that failed to make the playoffs [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/05/19/nba-draft-preview-version-10/feed/ 0 05.04.08 Fast Breaks http://rushthecourt.net/2008/05/04/050408-fast-breaks/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/05/04/050408-fast-breaks/#respond Mon, 05 May 2008 00:40:12 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=854

Weekend kibbles n’ bits…

Bruce Pearl booted UT guard Ramar Smith and forward Duke Crews off the team, reportedly for failing drug tests. New Hoosier head man Tom Crean refused to allow Armon Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis back onto the team, while kicking DeAndre Thomas off the squad as well. This all occurred one day after the bizarre transfer of Eli Holman, leaving Indiana with only seven scholarship players for 2008-09. Missisippi State’s Ben Hansbrough (little bro of Psycho-T) will transfer to Notre Dame next year, ostensibly because he didn’t like the MSU offense. Speaking of impact transfers, Georgetown’s Vernon Macklin will end [...]]]>

From the in-case-you-missed-it file, and we know you did, THE Ohio State University played in the Dave Odom Invitational NIT Championship last night against UMass, and since the Buckeyes were not playing Florida in a collegiate postseason event, they actually managed to win this one 92-85.

Kosta Koufos led the way for OSU with 23 pts while Ricky Harris poured in 27 for the losing team.  This is probably a good thing for Thad Matta’s team, as he stands to lose his top three scorers (Othello Hunter and Jamar Butler to graduation; Kosta [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/04/04/were-66/feed/ 0 ATB: Wed/Thurs Wrapup http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/30/atb-wedthurs-wrapup/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/30/atb-wedthurs-wrapup/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2007 02:58:11 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/30/atb-wedthurs-wrapup/

ACC 8 – Big Ten 3. Wed. night was the second marquee night of the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, and the ACC carried a commanding 5-1 lead into the night’s games. After UNC (v. Ohio St.) and BC (v. Michigan) picked up road wins to go with Maryland’s home victory v. Illinois, the ACC had once again dominated this event (Penn St. and Michigan St. home wins made the final tally 8-3). What accounts for this annual decimation? One reason is that the ACC protects home court [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/30/atb-wedthurs-wrapup/feed/ 0 ATB: Black Friday for Louisville http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/24/atb/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/24/atb/#comments Sat, 24 Nov 2007 06:56:28 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/11/24/atb/

Game of the Day. BYU 78, #6 Louisville 76. Due to familial obligations, we didn’t get to see this game tonight, so chime in if you did, but the result here didn’t shock us. On Wed. night we caught a good portion of the Cards’ game with UNLV, and even though they ended up winning by 20, it was an ugly performance. Game of the Day. #10 Duke 77 #12 Marquette 73. There were several games we were looking forward to watching today, but truthfully this was the only game that stepped up to the plate and delivered an interesting result as Duke won its fourth Maui Invitational. We continue to be impressed by what Duke is accomplishing without any semblance of an inside presence. Literally, none. Everything they get is off the drive or off the jumper. Story of the Night. Boring. There was really only one good game tonight – Syracuse 72, St. Joseph’s 69. We had this one on our upset alert radar last night, and it took a three from Jonny Flynn at the top of the key to put the Hawks away at the Carrier Dome tonight (see vid below). Amazingly, that was Flynn’s only hoop of the game, coming after his record 28 pts last night. Another UF is Coming For You, Buckeyes!!!

First Michigan St. lost to Grand Valley St. on Saturday. Tonight Ohio St. went down 70-68 at the hands of Findlay (OH). To be fair, Findlay is the #5 ranked team in the D2 preseason poll, and they were 29-2 last year. But still… Findlay? We’re so far behind in news that this is a must-post…

Huckleberry Hound Roy Williams and the entire 1966 Texas Western squad were the collegiate candidates inducted into the Basketball HOF on Friday.  No beef with the Glory Road fellas (although UK and Rupp’s ex post facto vilification is a story that still needs correcting), but has RW accomplished enough yet (five F4s, one title) to warrant inclusion?  Seems as if the committee jumped a little early on that one. Come see the new inclusions in your town this fall, as the HOF is making a 30-city tour around the country over the next year.  The [...]]]>
