By now, if you care, you know already: San Diego State put together an impressive late-game run to overcome a 16-point deficit to knock off New Mexico on Saturday night, earning the Mountain West conference regular season title and thrilling the capacity Viejas Arena crowd. It was a great game, a great scene and a great encapsulation of all that we love about college basketball.

For San Diego State, the run at the end of the game was indicative of what they’ve done all year. It’s the first week in February, and we’re basically halfway through the conference season (believe it or not). So for the most part this week, our Mountain West check-in will be a review of the season to this point combined with  look forward, while just touching on a handful of stories from this past week.

First, the conference race. San Diego State remains atop the standings without a blemish in conference play. They’re ranked fifth in the nation and in the RTC25 and in strong contention for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But New Mexico has just one conference [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/02/04/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-40/feed/ 0 Checking in on… the Mountain West http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/21/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-38/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/21/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-38/#respond Wed, 22 Jan 2014 00:42:12 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=102422

With New Mexico taking a home loss to UNLV this week and Nevada slipping back to reality a bit, San Diego State is all alone in the driver’s seat, the last remaining undefeated team in conference play. Now with a 15-game winning streak, the Aztecs have earned their way into the #11 spot in the latest RTC Top 25. Beyond Steve Fisher’s club, however, there are a lot of question marks. The Lobos are the clear #2 team in the conference, but questions remain about their long-term NCAA Tournament aspirations. Our resident bracketologist has them firmly in the field, but [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/21/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-38/feed/ 0 Checking in On… the Mountain West http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/08/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-36/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/01/08/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-36/#respond Thu, 09 Jan 2014 00:04:43 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=101924

After the slowdown around the holidays, the Mountain West is back in full swing. Conference play is underway; everybody has played at least one game against a conference opponent; and San Diego State ended non-conference play on a big high, scoring a thoroughly impressive win at Kansas over the weekend. There’s a lot to get to, so let’s jump right in, after recognizing that right now we have Air Force and Nevada – two teams we have been making fun of all season – tied atop the conference standings with 2-0 records.

Hooray! The Mountain West has its hero. November is in the books and the conference finally has a victory worth crowing about under its collective belt. In fact, San Diego State scored a couple really meaningful wins this week at the Wooden Legacy, knocking off both Creighton and Marquette to earn the tournament title. Still, I for one have yet to put a MW team in my weekly national Top 25. I’ve considered New Mexico previously and have kept them just on the outside looking in. Boise State also remains in the back of my mind, where they’ll stay until they [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/03/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-33/feed/ 0 Morning Five: 05.16.13 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2013/05/16/morning-five-05-16-13-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2013/05/16/morning-five-05-16-13-edition/#respond Thu, 16 May 2013 12:01:54 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=97257

It’s now been nearly two days since the Andrew Wiggins Sweepstakes was won by Bill Self and Kansas. Reactions have run the gamut and we ran down a number of the better ones in yesterday’s M5. One we missed was this fantastic piece by Sam Mellinger at the Kansas City Star, who writes that everyone in the media and greater college basketball community needs to be very careful with the hyperbole when discussing Wiggins next season as the “Best High School Prospect Since Lebron.” Mellinger breaks down each of the best prep players in the last 10 years since Lebron, [...]]]>

Memphis Drops From Top 25: Memphis is unranked following the program’s 76-72 loss to Murray State last week. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Memphis and catapulted the Racers into the Top 25. The Tigers received 13 votes in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches poll along with 27 votes in the Associated Press poll, neither number being high enough to keep Memphis in the rankings with a mediocre 5-3 start.
