The early portion of conference play often comes with observations about how new coaches are working out in their programs. Those quick-hit observations can often be misguided because of a small sample size, but there are times where such declarations can clearly be taken as a sign of positive things to come. For example, take a look at what Kermit Davis is doing in his first season at #13 Ole Miss. The Rebels went just 12-20 last season and were picked to finish dead last in the SEC preseason media poll, but a 13-2 start featuring a resounding 82-67 home [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2019/01/14/2018-19-rtc16-week-nine/feed/ 0 Big Ten Middle Tier Stock Watch http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/27/big-ten-middle-tier-stock-watch/ http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/27/big-ten-middle-tier-stock-watch/#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2017 21:01:02 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=125900

Nine of the 14 Big Tens currently have conference records of either 4-4 or 3-5. It was expected to be a wide open year in the middle of the standings and we have gotten exactly that this season. With 10 regular season games remaining for each of these nine squads, let’s review which teams are trending toward a finish in the upper half of the league standings and a corresponding NCAA Tournament bid (Buy), which teams are still difficult to figure (Hold), and which teams are going to falter down the home stretch of the regular season (Sell).

Buy: Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State

Michigan looked like the Michigan of old in a 78-72 win over Texas on Friday night, shooting 58 percent from the floor and scoring 1.26 points per possession. But in both losses to date this season — a loss last Wednesday to Connecticut and a November 20 loss to Xavier — Michigan struggled to rebound, score in the paint or find a reliable scorer outside of do-everything guard Caris LeVert. All of these were familiar struggles for those who watched much of Michigan’s 16-16 season last year. Here’s a closer look at Michigan’s first six games and the best way for [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/11/30/finding-michigans-winning-formula-given-its-frontcourt-troubles/feed/ 0 Big Ten M5: 03.11.14 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/11/big-ten-m5-03-11-14-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/11/big-ten-m5-03-11-14-edition/#respond Tue, 11 Mar 2014 14:40:00 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=104077

It’s been an outstanding, yet unusual, season for Michigan. Unlike last season where things fell into place for the Wolverines under the leadership of Trey Burke, this season’s squad dealt with early adversity with the loss of Mitch McGary. On Saturday, the usually mild-mannered John Beilien let his emotions fly against Indiana. He has had to use an unusual set of motivational tactics to reach this “uncommon” team. But as unusual as this team may be, they also managed to do something last year’s national championship runner-up never did, win an outright Big Ten title. They’re also projected to be a [...]]]>

Last week started off poorly for Ohio State with a loss to Penn State, but they managed to end on a positive note with a win at Wisconsin. Despite that, the Buckeyes found themselves unranked in this week’s AP Top 25 for the first time since 2010. This news highlights a fall from grace that has led the Buckeyes to a sub-.500 record in league play. They’ve been hurting themselves with an impotent offense, which ranks 163rd in points per game and 118th in offensive efficiency. The Buckeyes have a tough road game at Iowa tonight, but there is some [...]]]>

Some bad news came out of Ann Arbor on Friday night. Sophomore big man Mitch McGary has elected to have surgery on his lower back and is out indefinitely for the Wolverines. McGary has been dealing with this nagging injury since late summer and has, up until now, played through the pain. Thus far this season, McGary has not looked like the player he did in last March’s tournament (averaging 14.3 PPG and 10.7 RPG) and has fallen short of expectations this season (averaging 9.5 PPG and 8.3 RPG). Apparently, the McGary family decided collectively over the holidays that, in [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2013/12/28/mitch-mcgary-out-indefinitely-and-what-it-means-for-michigan/feed/ 0 NBA Draft Picks by School Part III http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/28/nba-draft-picks-by-school-part-iii/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/28/nba-draft-picks-by-school-part-iii/#respond Thu, 28 Jun 2007 20:18:58 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/28/nba-draft-picks-by-school-part-iii/

Today is the final installment of the three-part series where we wanted to take a look at the NBA Draft broken down by school over the history of the modern NBA Draft (1949-2006). In Part I, we examined the raw numbers and made a rudimentary attempt at tying NBA talent to NCAA Tournament success. In Part II, we broke out the raw numbers by round selected, and then further sliced that data into an examination of “Top 10” and “Top 5” selections. Today we finish off the series by looking at draft selections by decade, hoping to see how [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2007/06/28/nba-draft-picks-by-school-part-iii/feed/ 0
