For what it’s worth, I think Virginia Tech should have made the NCAA Tournament last season. I have a hard time believing that this team was worse than Villanova, Marquette, or Missouri, to name a few of the other power conference teams that got the bubble nod while Virginia Tech was overlooked once again. I understand the case for those teams, but believe me when I say that last year’s Hokies were a tough, resilient team stocked with great players. Malcolm Delaney was a great basketball talent and his fellow seniors, Jeff Allen and Terrell Bell were all excellent starters for [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/10/31/acc-team-previews-virginia-tech/feed/ 0 Allan Chaney Denied Medical Clearance By Virginia Tech http://rushthecourt.net/2011/08/10/allan-chaney-denied-medical-clearance-by-virginia-tech/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/08/10/allan-chaney-denied-medical-clearance-by-virginia-tech/#comments Wed, 10 Aug 2011 21:57:02 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=39573

Virginia Tech announced today that it was denying transfer Allan Chaney medical clearance due to ongoing medical issues related to his diagnosis of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) in April 2010. Chaney, who was a 4-star recruit coming out of high school in Connecticut, appeared in 23 games as a freshman at Florida where he averaged 3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in limited action as he played just 9.8 minutes per game in a season that was marred by injuries and a season-ending suspension, which eventually led to his decision to leave Gainesville. After sitting out the 2009-10 season [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/08/10/allan-chaney-denied-medical-clearance-by-virginia-tech/feed/ 1 RTC Summer Updates: Atlantic Coast Conference http://rushthecourt.net/2011/07/21/rtc-summer-updates-atlantic-coast-conference-2/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/07/21/rtc-summer-updates-atlantic-coast-conference-2/#respond Thu, 21 Jul 2011 16:19:03 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=39213

Conference Recap

The ACC had a down year though North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall-led resurgence and Florida State’s Sweet Sixteen appearance helped a little bit. Before and during the season, Duke was the runaway favorite in the conference: Kyrie Irving’s toe injury obviously was the pivotal point that brought Duke back down to earth. Equally pivotal (in the reverse direction) was Marshall’s move to starting point guard for North Carolina. With Larry Drew II at the helm, there is no way the Tar Heels could have come close to surpassing Duke for [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/04/28/conference-report-card-acc/feed/ 4 Set Your Tivo: 03.12.11 http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/12/set-your-tivo-03-12-11/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/12/set-your-tivo-03-12-11/#respond Sat, 12 Mar 2011 18:03:08 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=35286

Postseason Preview

North Carolina is hot.  It took almost all of the regular season, but the Tar Heels are finally living up to preseason hype.  UNC  should definitely be favored to win the ACC Tournament, but I wouldn’t bet on them.  I think the Heels are due for one more hiccup before the Big Dance.  They’ve flirted with disaster [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/10/acc-wrap-tourney-preview/feed/ 7 Set Your Tivo: 03.05.11 http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/05/set-your-tivo-03-05-11/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/05/set-your-tivo-03-05-11/#respond Sat, 05 Mar 2011 17:00:05 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=34559

A Look Back

Hold onto your seats, Hokie fans, you’re on the right side of the bubble after a statement win against Duke this week.  Virginia Tech’s win was just what the doctor ordered, but the Hokies are far from a lock (for everyone but Dickie V).  The Hokies won despite a very poor night from star Malcolm Delaney, who did hit a huge three late but was otherwise ineffective.  Jeff Allen picked up any slack Delaney left, finishing with 18 points and 15 boards.  But the [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/checking-in-on-the-acc-29/feed/ 2 The Week That Was: Feb. 21-28 http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/the-week-that-was-feb-21-28/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/the-week-that-was-feb-21-28/#respond Tue, 01 Mar 2011 14:10:05 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=34093

Introduction

March is here. Need we say more? Those three little words should be enough to put an extra skip in your step this morning and the rest of the week. March is the month when it’s not only socially acceptable to call in sick from work to watch sports — it’s encouraged. The way this season’s gone, the Tournament should be beyond epic, possibly even exceeding last year’s chaotic first two rounds. And if more male cheerleaders are involved, that’s OK by us. A Look Back

A lot has happened the past two weeks, so let’s tackle it in chronological order and we’ll sum things up at the end.

Duke and North Carolina lived up to the hype.  Last year just didn’t feel right with the games being lopsided.  Kendall Marshall is probably the best passer from halfcourt I’ve ever seen.  He’s not fast, but he pushes the ball up the court just as fast as Ty Lawson or Raymond Felton but he dishes from halfcourt instead of right around the [...]]]>

No news on Kyrie Irving or his toe, but Sidney Lowe did pipe in on Tracy Smith’s injury: per Brett Friedlander of Star News Online, Lowe said, “It’s a tough deal… It’s very frustrating, but I think it’s frustrating for Tracy as well.  This was a big year for him, a big year for us.”  Now, I don’t want to read too much into a coach’s postgame interviews following a tough loss to Arizona (who had their way with the Wolfpack inside), but it [...]]]>
