Looking at the North Carolina State roster from last year, it’s hard to see how this team was so bad. The pieces all seemed to be there, but the last year of Sidney Lowe‘s tenure was undoubtedly a disappointing season for the Wolfpack. The team won only fifteen total games last season and five in the conference. That said, N.C. State won all the games it was supposed to win and didn’t allow any serious upsets. The closest thing NCSU has to a bad loss was a defeats to Boston College and Virginia. That’s really not all that bad. Conference Recap

The ACC had a down year though North Carolina’s Kendall Marshall-led resurgence and Florida State’s Sweet Sixteen appearance helped a little bit. Before and during the season, Duke was the runaway favorite in the conference: Kyrie Irving’s toe injury obviously was the pivotal point that brought Duke back down to earth. Equally pivotal (in the reverse direction) was Marshall’s move to starting point guard for North Carolina. With Larry Drew II at the helm, there is no way the Tar Heels could have come close to surpassing Duke for [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/04/28/conference-report-card-acc/feed/ 4 ACC Wrap & Tourney Preview http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/10/acc-wrap-tourney-preview/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/10/acc-wrap-tourney-preview/#comments Thu, 10 Mar 2011 16:00:14 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=34811

Postseason Preview

North Carolina is hot. It took almost all of the regular season, but the Tar Heels are finally living up to preseason hype. UNC should definitely be favored to win the ACC Tournament, but I wouldn’t bet on them. I think the Heels are due for one more hiccup before the Big Dance. They’ve flirted with disaster [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/10/acc-wrap-tourney-preview/feed/ 7 Checking in on… the ACC http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/checking-in-on-the-acc-29/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/checking-in-on-the-acc-29/#comments Wed, 02 Mar 2011 01:03:33 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=34140

A Look Back

Hold onto your seats, Hokie fans, you’re on the right side of the bubble after a statement win against Duke this week. Virginia Tech’s win was just what the doctor ordered, but the Hokies are far from a lock (for everyone but Dickie V). The Hokies won despite a very poor night from star Malcolm Delaney, who did hit a huge three late but was otherwise ineffective. Jeff Allen picked up any slack Delaney left, finishing with 18 points and 15 boards. But the [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/03/01/checking-in-on-the-acc-29/feed/ 2 Checking in on… the ACC http://rushthecourt.net/2011/01/18/checking-in-on-the-acc-24/ http://rushthecourt.net/2011/01/18/checking-in-on-the-acc-24/#respond Tue, 18 Jan 2011 16:00:53 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=31222

A Look Back:

And then there were none. The biggest conference news of the week was Duke losing at Florida State (as called by yours truly in last week’s Look Ahead). All the speculation to whether Duke could finish ACC play (and the regular season) undefeated was squashed thanks to a fantastic effort from the Seminoles. They popped Duke right in the mouth from the get-go, playing physical defense that negated any potential presence inside and forced the Blue Devils to take low percentage contested jumpers. I [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2011/01/18/checking-in-on-the-acc-24/feed/ 0 RTC Conference Primers: #4 – Atlantic Coast Conference http://rushthecourt.net/2010/11/03/rtc-conference-primers-4-atlantic-coast-conference/ http://rushthecourt.net/2010/11/03/rtc-conference-primers-4-atlantic-coast-conference/#comments Wed, 03 Nov 2010 15:33:55 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=26163

When the Gators and Wolfpack got together last season, it was the third day in January and Nick Calathes scored 32 points to help Florida pull out a 68-66 win in Gainesville. Exactly one year later, the faces have changed, but many expect the 2010 version of Florida (10-3) v. North Carolina State (10-3) to be just as exciting: Ken Pomeroy predicts a 66-65 win for Billy Donovan’s team. For NC State to come out on top, star big man Tracy Smith (17.2 ppg & 9.1 rpg) needs to be a factor—his foul trouble relegated him to [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/01/03/rtc-live-florida-nc-state/feed/ 2 Checking in on… the ACC http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/29/checking-in-on-the-acc-10/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/29/checking-in-on-the-acc-10/#comments Wed, 30 Dec 2009 00:57:35 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=14723

A Very Wise Man. Arizona 76, NC State 74. Why is this our lead game tonight? Because it’s not often that you see two difficult length-of-the-court layups within the last ten seconds of a game, and it’s even less often that the player who hits the game-winner does so for the second game in a row. Nic Wise must have been a very good boy this year because Santa is treating him right this holiday season. Just two nights after making a ridiculously difficult touch/push three from about 25 feet to win a game against Lipscomb (we’ll overlook [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/24/atb-one-of-the-wise-men-came-early-this-year/feed/ 1 09.26.07 Fast Breaks http://rushthecourt.net/2007/09/26/092607-fast-breaks/ http://rushthecourt.net/2007/09/26/092607-fast-breaks/#respond Thu, 27 Sep 2007 05:31:49 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/2007/09/26/092607-fast-breaks/

Some news flotsam and jetsam we’ve accumulated this week…

It was an expensive week for Ohio State paying its head coaches, as Thad Matta got a $500k raise (to $2.5M per annum) and contract extension through 2016. Tennessee forward Duke Crews has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. How long is “indefintely?” We mentioned it briefly above, but it deserves its own note. Former Hawg PG Corey Beck was shot Sunday morning during a robbery attempt – he is listed in good condition. Free Shoes University is embroiled in another cheating scandal – the question is which sports are involved? Porsches, Polo & Ponies. [...]]]>
