The game is evolving away from the basket and toward the three-point line. That’s what Daryl Morey and James Harden would have you believe. The Golden State Warriors would have you think the same. We don’t need advanced metrics to understand that 3>2. Especially if you can make it, the three-pointer is the most valuable in the sport. This distance trend isn’t reserved for just the pros. The collegiate three-ball is being shot at a higher clip than ever before. A 36 percent share of all shots are from distance. Like we explored last week, teams make an effort to help their best shooters make that [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/16/weekly-pac-5-mid-range-shooters/feed/ 0 Expectations Bring Growing Pains at Oregon State http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/09/expectations-bring-growing-pains-at-oregon-state/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/09/expectations-bring-growing-pains-at-oregon-state/#respond Fri, 09 Dec 2016 21:45:37 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=124307

When Gary Payton II graduated from Oregon State last spring, it was well understood that the Beavers were losing one of their best players of all-time and would face an uphill battle back to the NCAA Tournament. With one month of this season now in the books, dancing again in March seems all but forgotten. Oregon State lost a close road game to a marginal Charlotte team last weekend, dropping its overall record to 3-6 and reflecting the team’s sixth straight loss to a Division I opponent. While head coach Wayne Tinkle‘s two-year extension and raise in light of the team’s first NCAA appearance since [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/09/expectations-bring-growing-pains-at-oregon-state/feed/ 0 Pac-12 Burning Questions: Can Stephen Thompson Jr. Make the Leap? http://rushthecourt.net/2016/10/21/pac-12-burning-questions-can-stephen-thompson-jr-make-the-leap/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/10/21/pac-12-burning-questions-can-stephen-thompson-jr-make-the-leap/#respond Fri, 21 Oct 2016 20:01:59 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=121813

It has been a weird offseason for Oregon State. If you were looking ahead at the team’s prospects for this upcoming season last March, the future looked very bright even if do-everything guard Gary Payton II was graduating. But Payton’s heir apparent, combo guard Derrick Bruce, transferred out of the program in April followed by steady senior Malcom Duvivier leaving the program for personal reasons in September. These departures suddenly left the Beavers’ backcourt without most of its depth and experience, isolating sophomore Stephen Thompson Jr. as the lone returnee with any on-court experience. Yet Wayne Tinkle and Beavers’ fans are still bullish on their team’s potential this season, [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/10/21/pac-12-burning-questions-can-stephen-thompson-jr-make-the-leap/feed/ 0 Pac-12 First Impressions http://rushthecourt.net/2015/11/16/pac-12-first-impressions/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/11/16/pac-12-first-impressions/#respond Mon, 16 Nov 2015 20:39:13 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=110932

The first weekend is in the books. Everybody’s played at least once and some teams have even gotten a couple games under their belts. There were some positive surprises (hello, Washington!) and some early disappointments (oh, UCLA), but we’ve got already plenty to talk about. Let’s take a spin around the conference and give a sentence or two on every team, while expanding on those teams that have done something — whether positive or negative — to deserve a little more.
