Burning Question: Can Shaka Smart turn Texas into a basketball school?

College basketball feels like it’s engaged in a constant search for the next big thing. The one-and-done rule has turned college hoops into a temporary pit stop for the next great NBA player, and in a similar fashion, athletic departments at power conference schools are often looking to find the next mid-major head coach who can transform a struggling program into an overnight success. While many highly touted coaches including Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall have resisted the calls from power five [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/10/26/big-12-preview-texas-burning-question/feed/ 0 Big 12 Weekend Preview http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/13/big-12-weekend-preview/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/13/big-12-weekend-preview/#respond Fri, 13 Feb 2015 20:45:28 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=107805

As we move into mid-February, the dust in the Big 12 race may finally be starting to settle. Kansas at the head of the pack isn’t anything new, but recent games have brought us a little more clarity behind them after several weeks of volatility. Oklahoma has built a sliver of separation on Iowa State and Baylor while West Virginia‘s backloaded schedule looks like it’s starting to catch up to them. Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Oklahoma State, which has done more in the last week to change its NCAA Tournament status than perhaps any other team in the country. Weekend #7 of [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/13/big-12-weekend-preview/feed/ 0 Big 12 M5: 02.11.15 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/11/big-12-m5-02-11-15-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/11/big-12-m5-02-11-15-edition/#respond Wed, 11 Feb 2015 15:31:29 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=107787

We now have repeat winners representing this week’s Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week. Baylor’s Rico Gathers takes Player of the Week after sharing the honor with K-State’s Nino Williams two weeks ago. It’s hard to deny the award to a guy who averaged 15.5 points and 17 rebounds in wins over TCU and West Virginia but that’s exactly what Gathers accomplished for the Bears. Oklahoma State’s Anthony Hickey wins his second Newcomer of the Week award after taking home the honors for the week of December 15. Hickey’s 15 points in a win at Texas and 15 more vs Kansas were [...]]]>

Texas

Hey look, Rick Barnes magically became a good coach again! Some may have actually had this thought, but no, he didn’t become a terrible coach after one bad season. Those calling for his termination have to remember that Barnes has taken the program to heights not seen since the midway point of the 20th century. It’s hard to believe the same Texas team picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll last season won 24 games and made [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/12/big-12-season-preview-texas-longhorns/feed/ 0 Matchup Analysis: Is Texas Built to End Kansas’ Big 12 Dominion? http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/06/matchup-analysis-is-texas-built-to-end-kansas-big-12-dominion/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/06/matchup-analysis-is-texas-built-to-end-kansas-big-12-dominion/#respond Thu, 06 Nov 2014 17:01:31 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=105791

It’s been 10 long years, but the prominent question in the Big 12 remains the same: Will someone throw Kansas from the mountain top? There have been some fantastic runners-up in the Big 12 over the years and four teams have shared the regular season crown with the Jayhawks, so even if the streak isn’t quite as dominant as it appears, it is still incredible. Impressive as it is, though, consistency can be boring, too. With that in mind, it’s natural to identify the next-best team in the conference at the beginning of the season and ask the question of whether this is the year it [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/11/06/matchup-analysis-is-texas-built-to-end-kansas-big-12-dominion/feed/ 0 Rushed Reactions: #2 Michigan 79, #7 Texas 65 http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/22/rushed-reactions-2-michigan-79-7-texas-65/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/22/rushed-reactions-2-michigan-79-7-texas-65/#respond Sun, 23 Mar 2014 00:54:11 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=104706

Michigan’s three-point shooting carried it to victory. The Wolverines have been a very good three-point shooting team all season, and that carried over to Saturday afternoon. John Beilein’s squad used 14 three-pointers – on 28 attempts from behind the arc – to pace itself to a comfortable victory over Texas.  Starters Derrick Walton Jr., Nik Stauskas, Caris LeVert, [...]]]>

Three Takeaways.

This victory was a team effort from Texas. The Longhorns have been a balanced offensive unit all season and that was again the story for them in the win over Arizona State. Where We Left Off: The 2012-13 edition of the Texas Longhorns featured the first losing season in the Rick Barnes era. Barnes’ squad struggled to a 16-18 overall record and a 7-11 conference mark, ending the streak of 14 consecutive years that Barnes had taken Texas to the NCAA Tournament.
