Team of the Week

San Diego State – It’s been a couple weeks since we did this because we took last week to compile our Best in the West list, so this award encompasses not only the Aztecs’ two by-the-book wins over New Mexico and San Jose State, but also the wins from the previous week over Wyoming and Colorado State that put them atop the Mountain West standings. The San Diego State offense is starting to come around (it’s now played four straight games where it scored better than a point per possession); the Aztecs’ defense is still downright scary; [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/02/24/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-53/feed/ 0 Checking in on… the Mountain West http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/13/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-48/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/13/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-48/#respond Tue, 13 Jan 2015 21:45:06 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=107253

Team of the Week

Wyoming – Two tough games and two hard-fought wins over Colorado State and Boise State bring the Cowboys’ record to 15-2 on the season and 4-0 in conference play, putting them along atop the Mountain West standings. They’ve won seven in a row now, and have been rewarded with a spot in the AP poll for the first time since March 15, 1988, back in the days of Fennis Dembo and Eric Leckner. No surprise then that, with apologies to Theo Ratliff, the Cowboys may have their best individual player since those days in Larry Nance, who [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/01/13/checking-in-on-the-mountain-west-48/feed/ 0 Bracket Prep: UCLA, New Mexico, New Mexico State http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/16/bracket-prep-ucla-new-mexico-new-mexico-state/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/03/16/bracket-prep-ucla-new-mexico-new-mexico-state/#respond Sun, 16 Mar 2014 19:15:13 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=104385

With San Diego State and New Mexico earning semifinal victories Friday night, the MW title game match-up that everyone expected came to fruition, albeit with some new faces occupying starring roles along the way. SDSU’s Dwayne Polee may have been voted the MW’s Sixth Man of the Year earlier in the week, but the junior transfer from St. John’s had only scored in double figures four times in 2014 before he erupted for a game high 18 points against UNLV last night. Wednesday was a busy day at the Thomas and Mack, with eight quarterfinalists battling for Friday reservations in the MW Tournament semis. Like they have all season, San Diego State and New Mexico found a way to distance themselves from the rest of the league on Thursday, but UNLV and Boise State were forced to work a little harder for their spot in the semifinals. Here are a few thoughts from each of the four MW quarterfinals:

It was a great game, a great scene and a great encapsulation of all that we love about college basketball.

Wichita State Deserves a Number One Seed

There is a vocal group out there making it known that Wichita State should not receive a top seed in next month’s NCAA Tournament. When Andy Enfield made his statements criticizing Steve Alford and Tim Floyd we figured that he would hear about them. We just never figured it would be in a public place in front of journalists. As Seth Davis detailed, Floyd approached Enfield and began yelling at him in front of Enfield’s wife and a group of onlookers. Assistants for both schools had to step in to separate the two. It’s unfortunate that the two had to air out their differences so publicly, but Enfield had to expect some blowback after his arrogant comments. It appears that the Chane Behanan 2012 Final [...]]]>

Less than a week after he removed Ben Howland from his job as the UCLA head coach and after taking on a couple of strikes with his top two candidates, athletic director Dan Guerrero dug in and roped a solid line-drive single in hiring former New Mexico head coach Steve Alford.
