You may have heard in recent days that Kentucky’s John Calipari has been filling up on the tasty nougat that has risen to the top of the Class of 2010 high school basketball recruiting lists. Five-star prospect Brandon Knight followed an impressive chorus line of 1-and-done Calipari point guards (D. Rose, T. Evans, J. Wall) by committing to the Wildcats on Wednesday, and Doron Lamb, another five-star combo guard ranked in the top 25, committed today. Turkish stud Enes Kanter committed last week, and there are rumors that others, including versatile [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/04/16/in-1-and-done-era-experience-wins-championships/feed/ 4 Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich to Return to Kansas… http://rushthecourt.net/2009/04/14/sherron-collins-and-cole-aldrich-to-return-to-kansas/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/04/14/sherron-collins-and-cole-aldrich-to-return-to-kansas/#respond Tue, 14 Apr 2009 06:52:02 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=8787

Two springs ago Bill Self received the bittersweet news that his star forward Brandon Rush had torn his ACL during predraft workouts and was returning to Lawrence for another year. Rush followed that up with a junior year that led to Kansas’ first national title in twenty years. This time around Self won’t even have to cry crocodile tears over a player’s injury because his two stars, point guard Sherron Collins and center Cole Aldrich, decided tonight that they will officially return to Kansas for another year. From the AP report:

Normally the McDonald’s All-American game (rosters here) would only be worth watching for the occasional ridiculous dunk or the lack of defense, but the circus in Lexington and the fall-out in Memphis makes this one pretty interesting. At least 3 potential Memphis commits (DeMarcus Cousins, Xavier Henry, and an uncommitted Lance Stephenson) are playing in this game. With John Calipari‘s decision to ditch Memphis for Lexington all of these guys are in play. Everyone knows that Stephenson will go the the highest bidder still hasn’t announced his decision, but Calipari’s decision puts Cousins and Henry back [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/04/01/boom-goes-the-dynamite-mcdonalds-all-american-game/feed/ 2 2008 NBA Draft Musings http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/27/2008-nba-draft-musings/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/27/2008-nba-draft-musings/#comments Fri, 27 Jun 2008 19:20:13 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=1014

Thanks to N-Bug’s liveblog of the NBA Draft last night, we felt like we were almost in the building sniffing David Stern’s manscent and Darrell Arthur’s ire. What’s the record for lowest pick of someone in the Green Room? The best we can muster is Rashard Lewis at #32 ten years ago. Anyone got a lower pick left stewing in the Green Room all night?

Well this is sort of unplanned, but rtmsf asked me to do this and I’ve got nothing else to do tonight so I figured I would throw up a live blog of the events.

7:30 PM: Everybody’s favorite commissioner/megalomanic David Stern walks to the stage. Pretty weak response from the crowd. Minimal booing and almost no response to a mention of the WNBA. I think Isiah and Dolan have broken the New York fans.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re going to be rolling out our profiles of several of the top expected prospects in the 2008 NBA Draft. Figuring that we’re not the only ones who’ve thought of this, we decided to enlist some help by asking several of the best school-specific bloggers in the land to give us the up-close-and-personal profile of the players they’ve spent all year watching. For example, we probably watched Brandon Rush play 15 times this year, but we were limited by his games that were on national television and other competing games at the same [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/25/2008-nba-draft-profiles-brandon-rush/feed/ 0 2008 Early Entry Winners and Losers http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/16/early-entry-winners-and-losers/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/06/16/early-entry-winners-and-losers/#respond Mon, 16 Jun 2008 23:04:56 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=982

Whew. After an exhausting day trying to track the news feeds seemingly every minute to figure out who was staying and who was leaving college, we can finally take a deep breath and start to sort out what this means for all the parties involved. Of the 69 early entries of US collegians submitted to the NBA league offices last month, 35 will remain in the 2008 NBA Draft pool. Here are the 35 early entries:

Some news on early entries as the deadline (Sunday at midnight) looms and some other flotsam we’ve been holding on to for your Friday…

UNC’s point guard Tywon Lawson will be testing the waters. Reading the tea leaves, does this signal a pending domino effect for his teammates Wayne Ellington, Tyler Hansbrough and/or Danny Green? Speaking of the Heels, in light of KU’s title, ol’ Roy’s face was consequently removed from a bathroom in a Lawrence, KS, barber shop. Super Mario Chalmers will be testing the waters of the NBA Draft, joining teammates Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur in the pool. Memphis juniors Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier joined Derrick Rose and [...]]]>

A few more drops of residual knowledge in the wake of Super Mario’s bomb…

Where does 2008 KU rank among this decade’s champions? We’d put them higher than seventh but lower than fourth. Brandon Rush is going pro, according to Yahoo Sports. What an amazing silver lining for Rush and KU after he blew out his knee during NBA workouts last spring. As a mirror question to the one floated about One Shining Moment below, is there anyone alive who actually likes Billy Packer? After Saturday night’s blowouts, we can only hope that tonight’s title bout will give us a great game to finish off the season. I think both teams have too much talent to get blown out, but I never would have expected UNC to fall behind 40-12 before nearly making Billy Packer look like an ass (again).

I’ll offer my take and hopefully rtmsf will add his too later (see below).

Game of the Day. #4 Kansas 76, Arizona 72. The four-days-early game between Kansas and Arizona in the inaugural Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series was everything a college hoops fan could have hoped for in such a meeting between two powerhouse programs. It had stars making plays (Budinger and Rush), tightness throughout (no team had a greater than 4-pt lead in the second half), a tantalizingly close halfcourt buzzer-beater, and an overtime just to fuel the early season intensity. An absolute ton of newsworthy stuff to catch up on from the weekend…

2008 #1 player Greg Monroe committed to Georgetown after his visit there this weekend. It couldn’t have had anything to do with that now-ubiquitous Jerry Rice dance, could it? “Hoops” Weiss has the definitive take on how Monroe will impact the Hoyas. Above the Rim writes that Duke (who was hot-n-heavy for Monroe) isn’t used to losing out on these guys. Making the Dance reports that after Georgetown (who obviously had the best MM weekend), Illinois (Bruce Weber can recruit after all?!?!), Indiana, Louisville and several others had good weekends. Lots of [...]]]>

What’s going on around the hoops world this week?

“Hoops” Weiss reports that 2007 A10 rookie of the year Robert Mitchell (16ppg; 5rpg) from Duquesne is transferring to Seton Hall. More injuries – Louisville’s Edgar Sosa is out four weeks with a sprained ankle, and Arkansas’ Sonny Weems is out the same amount of time with a broken hand (Weems has to miss the Hawgs’ trip to Cancun – rotten timing for him). A lot of piled-up news to get to today…

The biggest story: Brandon Rush tore his ACL, withdrew from the NBA Draft, will have surgery this week, and will likely be ready to play at KU next season. The 07–08 Jayhawks just got a lot better. Florida A&M’s coach Mike Gillespie was placed on paid leave after his recent arrest on misdemeanor stalking charges. Wait, the FAMU coach is white??
