Well…when it rains, it pours. And good lord did it pour following the ACC’s perfect 26-0 start. The conference has since gone 8-8 with absolutely hideous losses from Boston College (getting beaten by Holy Cross might be OK, but by 22?), Clemson (at College of Charleston would be one thing; at Littlejohn is another), and supposed-upstart Virginia (TCU is an acceptable loss… in football).

ACCSports.com: Mike Krzyzewski sounded a little like Dean Smith when he talked about win number 903 and retirement. Although he acknowledged the record was a big deal, Coach K deflected much of the credit to his former players. [...]]]>

On Monday we mentioned that the SEC would be looking for a 14th member to round out its new conference in the very near future. Yesterday, SEC commissioner Mike Silve came out and said they did not have any current plans to add a 14th team and did not have any other institutions currently under consideration to be the 14th team in the conference. We aren’t sure what to say about this other than to say we don’t believe it for a second unless Silve is trying to argue semantics. We can’t imagine that anybody actually believes that the SEC [...]]]>

After arguably being the third best team in the state of North Carolina the past 3 years (behind UNC and Davidson in 2008 and behind UNC and Wake Forest in 2009), Duke may have just ended up with the best team on Tobacco Road and the ACC by simply holding onto its stars this off-season with the possible exception of Gerald Henderson. Let’s run through the challengers for Duke in the state of North Carolina (NC State left out for Sidney Lowe obvious reasons).

We’re here. After five months of winnowing down 341 college basketball teams, we’ve got four teams left standing – UNC, UConn, Michigan St. and Villanoa. None of the four are surprises (although Villanova probably didn’t expect to be here) but all four are worthy candidates for the crown of 2009 National Champion. Let’s break down both games for you, and keep in mind that we’ll be running our usual Boom Goes the Dynamite starting about a half-hour before tip at 5:30pm EDT. See you then…

Dave Zeitlin and John Stevens contributed to this report.

We’ll be doing a full BGtD today so you won’t have any interruptions in coverage tonight. Honestly, last night’s games were kind of disappointing. Pittsburgh–Xavier was entertaining, but that was the only game that I would say was memorable from a pure basketball standpoint. Now the other games did have their own interesting subplots. UConn rolled over Purdue in a game that was close at points in the 2nd half, but I never really got the sense that the Huskies were in any danger of losing. I was particularly impressed with how the Huskies played despite the media [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/27/bgtd-regional-semifinals-day-two/feed/ 29 NCAA Sweet Sixteen: South Region Preview http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/26/ncaa-sweet-sixteen-south-regiona-preview/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/26/ncaa-sweet-sixteen-south-regiona-preview/#respond Fri, 27 Mar 2009 05:52:27 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=8003

RTC interns Matt P. and Mike L. are our NCAA Tournament East Region correspondents.

Isn’t it amazing how perfectly paired the Sweet 16 games look in the South Region? It’s almost as if the best four teams advanced, or something like that. Currently, Ken Pomeroy has both match-ups at nearly 50-50 odds: UNC with a 55% likelihood of beating Gonzaga and Syracuse with an even slimmer 52% of moving on over Oklahoma. Here’s hoping both games come down to the last shot so all the chalk haters out there can’t complain [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/26/ncaa-sweet-sixteen-south-regiona-preview/feed/ 0 Boom Goes the Dynamite: NCAA Tournament Day Three http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/21/boom-goes-the-dynamite-ncaa-tournament-day-three/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/03/21/boom-goes-the-dynamite-ncaa-tournament-day-three/#comments Sat, 21 Mar 2009 16:22:07 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=7761

After a relatively weak set of 1st round games (except for very late last night), we’re looking to forward to our beloved tournament returning to form with a strong set of 2nd round games. One of the benefits of the lack of shocking upsets in the first round games is that we get a good set of 2nd round games that won’t be blowouts. Right? Anyways, here is your slate of games.

You know that you’re coming to the end of the regular season when the McD’s Burger Boys are announced. This annual rite of late winter signals that it’s time to hunker down and prepare for some warmer weather and a little thing called March Madness, and this game always gives us a peak of some of the next few years’ stars to watch. Last year’s F4, for example, featured freshmen Kevin Love, Cole Aldrich and Derrick Rose – all three were Burger Boys in 2007, not to overlook Darrell Arthur, Sherron Collins, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/02/19/would-you-like-some-fries-with-your-neil-fingleton/feed/ 0 Set Your Tivos: Finals Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2008/12/15/set-your-tivos-finals-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/12/15/set-your-tivos-finals-edition/#comments Mon, 15 Dec 2008 20:21:12 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=3013 After a couple weeks off spent touring the country, Set Your Tivos is back. Then I saw Saturday, which is without a doubt the best set of college basketball games so far this season. In fact, Saturday is so good that I am going to do a separate Set Your Tivos for it.

News & Notes. First, a few notable pieces of news from the weekend.

As many as six of Arizona’s players could be ineligible for their opener Monday against Florida Atlantic in the Preseason NIT. This relates to the ‘big mistake’ that Lute Olson made by allowing a letter with his name affixed to it go out to boosters seeking financial support for a local AAU Tournament (an NCAA violation). The named players may have received impermissable expenses during this AAU event. We’re shocked, shocked we tell you, in finding Ole Miss and West Virginia (of all places) received Fs in a minority hiring report. Not sure what’s up [...]]]>

Upset of the Night. VMI 111, Kentucky 103. Well, for the second consecutive year we’ve not even made it to Thanksgiving before we have a nominee for biggest upset of the year because a small college from the South went into Rupp Arena and beat the Kentucky Wildcats on their home court. Last year it was Gardner-Webb; this year it was VMI, who was picked seventh in the Big South and last defeated a BCS team four seasons ago. The Cats aren’t ranked this season, but they arguably have more raw talent than they had a year ago. Most pundits have UK finishing second or [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2008/11/14/after-the-buzzer-another-nightmare-in-rupp/feed/ 0 Bobby Frasor is a Golden God! http://rushthecourt.net/2008/04/30/bobby-frasor-is-a-golden-god/ http://rushthecourt.net/2008/04/30/bobby-frasor-is-a-golden-god/#comments Wed, 30 Apr 2008 17:15:58 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=847
