South Florida 58, DePaul 49

South Florida looked really good in the first half. In the second half, a scrappy DePaul team started hitting some shots and made it somewhat exciting. But in the first half, USF looked absolutely dominant. They got just about whatever they wanted [...]]]>

It has been a long time since there was a good college basketball team in the NYC metro area.  Unless you consider Storrs, CT, in the NYC metro area.

This season was supposed to be different. Seton Hall had added transfers Herb Pope, Jamel Jackson, Jeff Robinson, and Keon Lawrence to a solid core. St. John’s was bringing everyone back, including one of the most underrated players in the league in DJ Kennedy. Rutgers lost Corey Chandler, but with Mike Rosario returning [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/01/06/checking-in-on-the-big-east-16/feed/ 0 Checking in on… the Big East http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/30/checking-in-on-the-big-east-15/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/30/checking-in-on-the-big-east-15/#comments Thu, 31 Dec 2009 05:57:09 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=14757

Here we are on the brink of Big East play. What does that mean? MID-SEASON AWARD TIME!!!

Co-Players of the Year: Da’Sean Butler, West Virginia and Wes Johnson, Syracuse

Depending on who you ask, these two are in the mix for the national player of the year. Butler (16.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.8 apg) has been the best player for West Virginia, even sliding over and playing some point guard in the past few games as Joe Mazzulla works [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/30/checking-in-on-the-big-east-15/feed/ 6 Morning Five: 12.17.09 Edition http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/17/morning-five-12-17-09-edition/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/17/morning-five-12-17-09-edition/#comments Thu, 17 Dec 2009 08:37:05 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=14096

St. John’s will hold out star forward Anthony Mason, Jr., for at least three more weeks as he continues to heal from a preseason hamstring injury.  The Johnnies have gotten off to an 8-1 start that includes solid wins against Siena and Temple.  SJU should be ok for another two weeks without him, but away games loom against Georgetown and Louisville right around the new year.  In other news, reserve Quincy Roberts will also take a medical redshirt due to recurring migraine headaches. Remember Josh Nochimson, the former UConn equipment manager who was tangled up in the investigation involving illegal contact [...]]]>

Despite the holiday, loyal readers of RTC may have noticed something missing last week.

Where was Checking in on the Big East?  Without BIAH waxing poetic about the happenings within the nation’s biggest conference, how were you able function?

For that, I must apologize.  But, you see, it wasn’t all my fault.  For starters, the editors at RTC are ruthless.  Not only did they have me traveling up and down the eastern seaboard during the busiest travel [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/12/02/checking-in-on-the-big-east-13/feed/ 8 Buzz: Will Anyone Make It to the Season? http://rushthecourt.net/2009/10/20/buzz-will-anyone-make-it-to-the-season/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/10/20/buzz-will-anyone-make-it-to-the-season/#respond Wed, 21 Oct 2009 01:08:15 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=12022

UCLA and Washington Can’t Even Hold Full Practices.  But for different reasons.  At UCLA, five players (Malcolm Lee, Jerime Anderson, James Keefe, Brendan Lane and Mike Moser) all have had minor injuries that are holding them out of practice.  None are serious enough to worry about, but is this a sign of bad luck or Howland toughening up his troops in Westwood?  At UW, seven players, including Quincy Pondexter and Venoy Overton, have been out sick with the flu so far this very young season.

Last week we took a look at the five impact players in the Northeast Region, so now we’re ready for the second installment of our ten-week RTC 2009-10 Impact Players series.   Each week we’ll pick a geographic area of the country and break down the five players who we feel will have the most impact on their teams (and by the transitive property, college basketball) this season.  Our criteria is once again subjective – there are so many good players in every region of the country that it’s difficult to narrow them down to only five  in each – [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/09/09/rtc-2009-10-impact-players-mid-atlantic-region/feed/ 7 07.23.09 Fast Breaks http://rushthecourt.net/2009/07/23/07-23-09-fast-breaks/ http://rushthecourt.net/2009/07/23/07-23-09-fast-breaks/#respond Thu, 23 Jul 2009 22:38:55 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=10753

It’s actually been a fairly busy week in the world of college hoops despite the mid-summer lull, so let’s take a look at some of the other key stories coming down the pike…

Hoop Dreams, 15 Years Later.  This week in his Hoops Thoughts column, Seth Davis pushed us down memory lane to the grungy days of 1994, a year of Cobain, Madonna’s undies and OJ’s white Bronco, but also of a bedraggled jewel of a documentary called “Hoop Dreams.”  We have a fair amount of younger readers on this site, so if you’ve never seen this movie, stop what you’re doing RIGHT [...]]]>

Give me an honest answer. What do you think is a more impressive accomplishment? Winning the Big East regular season title, winning the Big East Tournament, or reaching the Final Four?

Me? I’m going with the Big East regular season title. Every single time you step on the court in this league, it is a dogfight. It’s ridiculous what these teams go through. Remember 73-yr old Ken Mink’s first game where he scored two points?  We wondered who and how he could possibly get fouled?!?  Believe it or not, watch the video here of this CBS News report where Mink pump-fakes on the wing and gets hammered by some 19-year old defender (#23) who never learned to properly close out on shooters.
