All season long we have heard about how this year did not feature a “dominant team” and this was the “weakest bubble ever”, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a great tournament, which may be off the greatest start to a NCAA Tournament ever. While I’m not usually one prone to hyperbole, I can confidently say that I am having a hard time thinking of an opening set of games that can compare with this year. So far we have had the following things happen today:

Greetings, everyone, from beautiful San Jose, California. It’s a 75-degree outside the building, but nobody cares about that because it’s time for March Madness, and already across the country today, the games have been insane. Is there any other sporting event in the world that is so consistently awesome on a year-to-year basis? I’m going to be updating this diary by the half so as to accord with NCAA policies. Let me know if you have anything you’d like to know in the comments.

The Rematch. Kentucky 82, South Carolina 61. In the locker room before the game, John Calipari told his team, “Guys, before we start, here, I got a recruit here we want to talk to, so make sure you introduce yourself to the recruit.” A moment later, into the locker room walked…Earvin “Magic” Johnson. And honestly, that was about the only unexpected thing that happened this evening at Rupp Arena. To be sure, this looked pretty similar to the South Carolina squad that has ownership of the only bruise on [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/02/26/atb-magic-in-rupp/feed/ 1 (Elite) Eight Tuesday Scribbles… http://rushthecourt.net/2010/02/23/elite-eight-tuesday-scribbles/ http://rushthecourt.net/2010/02/23/elite-eight-tuesday-scribbles/#comments Tue, 23 Feb 2010 20:12:07 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=18146

This week’s Scribbles column will take on a new twist- which eight teams I’d select to reach the four regional final games in late March. Now, I realize individual matchups within the bracket will determine the fate of these teams, but these are the eight clubs I feel like have an excellent chance of winning three games to reach the Elite 8 regardless of the teams that stand in their way. Blowout Weekend. On paper, it looked to be a dog of a weekend, and for the most part it turned out that way. Among nearly 150 games, you’re bound to find some good ones, but among the Top 25 there were twelve games where the favorite won by 10+ points and of the six “upsets” involving ranked teams, even three of those were blowouts the other direction. Maybe everyone knew that the sports world’s focus would be on the Super Bowl, so they figured they’d save some drama for the rest of the month. Whatever the case, we’re [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2010/02/08/atb-blowout-weekend/feed/ 5 Set Your Tivo: 01.30.10 http://rushthecourt.net/2010/01/30/set-your-tivo-01-30-10/ http://rushthecourt.net/2010/01/30/set-your-tivo-01-30-10/#respond Sat, 30 Jan 2010 08:43:34 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=16732

NEWS & NOTES

The big story in the SEC this week was the arrest and indefinite suspension of four Tennessee basketball players — Tyler Smith, Melvin Goins, Cameron Tatum and Brian Williams. The group was arrested on a myriad of drug and weapon charges. Some of the charges were felonies, and given the recent problems with UT’s football program, it is hard to imagine any scenario in which the players may step back on the court this season. It is [...]]]>

Vanderbilt, a pre-season favorite along with Kentucky and Tennessee in the SEC’s Eastern Division, takes on 2-0 Saint Mary’s at 8:30 p.m. Pacific time tonight in the ultimate hostile environment — the Gaels’ bandbox gym in Moraga, CA. Over the course of the last ten weeks we’ve broken down sixty players from around the country whom we expect will have the biggest impact on college basketball this season. We performed this exercise geographically, choosing five high-major and one mid-major player from each of the somewhat arbitrary ten regions of the country. If you’d like to read through the individual regions (and we highly encourage that), you can check all ten here.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to read through all of the previous posts, we’ll summarize here for you by [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2009/11/08/rtc-2009-10-impact-players-wrap-up/feed/ 0
