Early in the second half in Monmouth’s conference opener last Thursday night at Quinnipiac, Je’lon Hornbeak launched a rushed three-pointer early in the shot clock. Usually in the college basketball world, such an act is followed by a the response of a red-faced coach throwing his hands in the air or running down the bench to replace the trigger-happy perpetrator. King Rice was only a couple of feet away from Hornbeak upon the release, but there was no reaction from the sixth-year head coach. Not even an instinctive pained look or shaking of his head. Thirty seconds later, there was a different [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/05/last-years-media-darling-monmouth-is-at-it-again/feed/ 1 All Eyes on DeAndre Bembry as Saint Joseph’s Looks to Surprise http://rushthecourt.net/2015/12/01/all-eyes-on-deandre-bembry-as-saint-josephs-looks-to-surprise/ http://rushthecourt.net/2015/12/01/all-eyes-on-deandre-bembry-as-saint-josephs-looks-to-surprise/#respond Tue, 01 Dec 2015 16:01:15 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=111963

As you’d expect late in a tie game, veteran Saint Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli drew up a play that heavily involved his best player. After all, junior DeAndre Bembry — whom Florida coach Mike White had just called the day before “their pro” — was the Atlantic 10’s top scorer last season, while also leading the Hawks in rebounds, assists, and steals. But after inbounding the ball, Bembry never came close to touching it, as Martelli’s carefully designed play descended into chaos. The end result, however, made Bembry one of the happiest people in Mohegan Sun Arena, as sophomore teammate Shavar Newkirk found [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2015/12/01/all-eyes-on-deandre-bembry-as-saint-josephs-looks-to-surprise/feed/ 0 Playing Their Way: On American’s Slow Pace http://rushthecourt.net/2014/12/29/american-u-s-slowest-pace-playing-their-way/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/12/29/american-u-s-slowest-pace-playing-their-way/#comments Mon, 29 Dec 2014 16:01:54 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=106956

American sophomore Charlie Jones was wide open when he got the ball in the right corner in the first half last Tuesday night at Stony Brook, the Eagles’ final non-conference game before beginning defense of their Patriot League title on Wednesday at Bucknell. Of course, “open” can be surprisingly subjective in the college basketball world. And although Jones has started 10 of 12 games this season, made more than 50 percent of his field goal attempts, and didn’t appear to have any immediate impediment to a 15-footer, he faked and kicked the ball back out. After all, there were still 25 seconds left on the [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2014/12/29/american-u-s-slowest-pace-playing-their-way/feed/ 1 Belmont Basketball: Same As It Ever Was http://rushthecourt.net/2014/12/23/belmont-proving-to-be-an-ovc-force/ http://rushthecourt.net/2014/12/23/belmont-proving-to-be-an-ovc-force/#respond Tue, 23 Dec 2014 16:31:44 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=106849

Three-game losing streaks don’t bother Rick Byrd much anymore. He’s now in his 29th season in charge of Belmont (the fourth-longest current tenure in Division I men’s basketball) and in a one-bid league like the Ohio Valley Conference (or the Atlantic Sun, previously), he knows that it’s all about the conference season. After all, his Bruins withstood a four-game losing streak at around the same time last year, but still managed to go 14-2 in conference play before being upset by Eastern Kentucky in the OVC Tournament semifinals (not to mention coming seconds away from the NIT Final Four in a loss at Clemson).
