Marquette has had an up-and-down season to this point. The Golden Eagles are 17-10 (8-7 Big East) with a resume that includes nice wins over Villanova and Creighton as well as head-scratching losses to St. John’s and Georgetown. Their most glaring flaws are on the defensive end of the floor (where they rank 138th nationally, per KenPom), but their inconsistency can also be attributed to a lack of an offensive go-to option. Marquette’s top players — who, it should be noted, are clearly buying into the team concept — cannot individually match the output provided by First Team All-Big East contenders such as Josh Hart (Villanova), Marcus Foster (Creighton) or [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2017/02/25/marquettes-offense-drives-the-golden-eagles-into-march/feed/ 0 Angel Delgado is Keeping Seton Hall Afloat http://rushthecourt.net/2017/02/09/angel-delgado-is-keeping-seton-hall-afloat/ http://rushthecourt.net/2017/02/09/angel-delgado-is-keeping-seton-hall-afloat/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2017 15:01:51 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=126210

Despite winning its last two games in overtime to keep its postseason hopes alive, Seton Hall’s season has not gone quite the way it had hoped. Coming off a campaign that included a Big East Tournament championship and a top-20 final ranking, the Pirates were probably expecting something slightly better than a 15-8 (5-6 Big East) record heading into the home stretch. The team has without question missed the play-making brilliance of all-Big East guard Isaiah Whitehead — who bolted South Orange for the NBA — but four upperclassman starters returned, including a player in junior center Angel Delgado who has emerged as one of the best [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2017/02/09/angel-delgado-is-keeping-seton-hall-afloat/feed/ 0 What is Xavier’s Ceiling Without Myles Davis? http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/29/what-is-xaviers-ceiling-without-myles-davis/ http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/29/what-is-xaviers-ceiling-without-myles-davis/#respond Sun, 29 Jan 2017 19:31:44 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=125921

Xavier, loser of four of its last five games, finds itself reeling after its Crosstown Shootout defeat to Cincinnati on Thursday night. The Musketeers now stand at 14-6 (4-3, fifth in the Big East) and have already lost as many games as all of last year. In a lot of ways, Xavier’s shaky play is not surprising. Having lost their two best big men from last season (Jalen Reynolds and James Farr), a certain level of drop-off was reasonable. What Chris Mack did not plan for, however, was the major hit his backcourt took when senior guard Myles Davis announced he would be stepping [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/29/what-is-xaviers-ceiling-without-myles-davis/feed/ 0 Future of St. John’s Basketball Resides In Its Freshman Backcourt http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/18/future-of-st-johns-basketball-resides-in-its-freshman-backcourt/ http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/18/future-of-st-johns-basketball-resides-in-its-freshman-backcourt/#respond Wed, 18 Jan 2017 15:01:29 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=125462

For a lot of schools, a record of 9-11 that includes two losing streaks of four or more games might sound disastrous. And while St. John’s certainly isn’t happy with its record to this point of the season, the Red Storm have already matched their win total from a year ago and must be pleased with the glimpses of potential the fourth-youngest roster in college basketball has shown. Fortunately for head coach Chris Mullin, two of his talented underclassmen in particular are showing signs of leading a future Big East juggernaut. St. John’s freshman backcourt of Marcus LoVett and Shamorie Ponds have made the Red Storm one of the more promising, and [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2017/01/18/future-of-st-johns-basketball-resides-in-its-freshman-backcourt/feed/ 0 Seton Hall Surging Despite Offensive Limitations http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/13/seton-hall-surging-despite-offensive-limitations/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/13/seton-hall-surging-despite-offensive-limitations/#respond Tue, 13 Dec 2016 15:01:59 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=124515

Seton Hall may have put together a dream season in winning the Big East Tournament last season but the Pirates relied upon the playmaking prowess of super sophomore Isaiah Whitehead and a top-10 defense to get there. That team’s Achilles Heel often came on the offensive end of the court, as ball movement sometimes had a tendency to stagnate. The Pirates assisted on just 51 percent of their makes — 203rd in the nation, per KenPom — while relying heavily on the all-Big East guard for the majority of their playmaking. As a result, there were two competing schools of thought about [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/13/seton-hall-surging-despite-offensive-limitations/feed/ 0 Tyler Lewis is Hitting His Stride in Running Butler’s Offense http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/01/tyler-lewis-is-hitting-his-stride-in-running-the-butler-offense/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/01/tyler-lewis-is-hitting-his-stride-in-running-the-butler-offense/#respond Thu, 01 Dec 2016 15:01:05 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=124148

It is hard to tell from just looking at the 5’11”, 157-pound senior, but once upon a time Butler point guard Tyler Lewis was a McDonald’s All-American. Despite limited size, his creativity as a passer and fearlessness in attacking the basket caught the attention of multiple high-major schools, including his ultimate destination, North Carolina State. With playing time fluctuating over two seasons in Raleigh, Lewis decided to transfer to Butler, where a promising start to his junior season gave way to decreased importance after the new year. Lewis entered his final season in college basketball as the only significant holdover in Butler’s [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/12/01/tyler-lewis-is-hitting-his-stride-in-running-the-butler-offense/feed/ 0 Point Guard Play Already an Issue at Georgetown http://rushthecourt.net/2016/11/16/guard-play-already-an-issue-at-georgetown/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/11/16/guard-play-already-an-issue-at-georgetown/#respond Wed, 16 Nov 2016 21:15:12 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=123498

Coming into this season, the biggest question surrounding Georgetown was whether it would finally let go of the Princeton offense. While head coach John Thompson III has experienced considerable success — including a 2007 trip to the Final Four — running the patient, half-court oriented system, last season’s 15-18 overall record (7-11 Big East) seemed to have been something of a breaking point. In the Hoyas’ first game this season against South Carolina Upstate, Georgetown pushed the ball in transition, fill the lanes on the fast break, and pressed after made baskets. It was refreshing to a see a Thompson team play with so much freedom, [...]]]> http://rushthecourt.net/2016/11/16/guard-play-already-an-issue-at-georgetown/feed/ 0 Big East Conference Preview: Georgetown, Butler, Seton Hall http://rushthecourt.net/2016/11/09/big-east-conference-preview-georgetown-butler-seton-hall/ http://rushthecourt.net/2016/11/09/big-east-conference-preview-georgetown-butler-seton-hall/#respond Wed, 09 Nov 2016 16:01:29 +0000 http://rushthecourt.net/?p=122651

The Hoyas lost leading scorer D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera to graduation but bring back all of their other key pieces from a disappointing 15-18 season.
