What’s Trending is a column examining the week that was in college basketball social media. Matthew Eisenberg (@matteise) is your weekly host.

The first four months of the college basketball season are now in the books, and this week gave us the annual Jon Rothstein countdown to March. Like clockwork, the CBS analyst delivered as all hoops fans knew he would. Welcome to March!

With March now here, conference races are in the home stretch. As such, Saturday night’s game between the best teams in the Mountain West ended with Utah State beating Nevada. After the game, Utah State fans rushed the court. Shortly after that, bedlam took place in the hallway under the arena as Nevada‘s Jordan Caroline erupted in anger. While to this point the incident is full of rumors and hearsay, it sets up what could be a wild match-up if the two teams see each other again in the Mountain West Tournament…

This week also featured some history. First there was Purdue’s Matt Haarms’ night of perfection against Illinois…

Earlier on Wednesday, Colgate got the best of Holy Cross in what was the Raiders’ 20th victory of the season. Colgate’s win leaves Brown with this ignoble distinction…

Also in the history books this week was this accomplishment of IPFW’s John Konchar. Knochar has been an All-Summit League First Team member in each of the past three seasons. While South Dakota State’s Mike Daum is the most well-known player from the Summit League, Knochar will graduate with his name in the record book…

Over the weekend, North Carolina’s Roy Williams fell to his knee on the sideline in a game against Clemson. While this incident was not the first time this has happened to Williams, it remains something that catches everyone off guard when it does…

This week saw Seton Hall’s Quincy McKnight slap the floor defensively as he was matched up against Georgetown’s James Akinjo. Slapping the floor and immediately allowing what happened next should result in McKnight not going to the floor any time soon…

While Oklahoma State‘s Lindy Waters ultimately came up short against Texas Tech on Saturday, this flurry by Waters in the final minute was something special…

This week also featured three dunks that could end up on a poster in the respective campus book stores of several schools. First, there was Alabama’s Donta Hall taking this pick-and-roll to the hoop with the strong finish over LSU’s Kavell Bigby-Williams…

And finally, there was this dunk by Nevada’s Caleb Martin in the closing minute of Saturday night’s game against Utah State. While the hoop was ultimately hoop waved off for a charge, this was a play that made everyone watching jump out of their seat…

While the focus of the next few weeks will be on seeding, the bubble and the NCAA Tournament, this time of the season also brings plenty of moments that remind us all of what makes college basketball so great.

First there was this moment at the end of Cal State Fullerton’s game against Cal Poly….

This behind-the-scenes moment of North Carolina Central’s Senior Night is the highlight of the week…
