What’s Trending: It’s Almost March Edition

What’s Trending is a column examining the week that was in college basketball social media. Griffin Wong (@griffwong90) is your weekly host.

Honoring Dean Smith

Among all the ways to honor the late Dean Smith, perhaps nothing was more fitting than what Roy Williams did on North Carolina’s first possession against Georgia Tech on Saturday. With his team wearing ’80s throwback jerseys, Williams had his team set up in Smith’s signature Four Corners offense.

Fittingly, it ended with a layup. Awesome. The Tar Heels eventually routed the Yellow Jackets 89-60, but Williams’ gesture was what drew praise from the social media crowd.

Farewell to Chris Jones

And Louisville’s chances in March? You can never count out Rick Pitino, but Louisville will certainly struggle to find perimeter scoring after Jones was dismissed from the team over the weekend. ESPN reported that Jones allegedly sent a threatening text message to a woman, and local reports suggest another incident that may have been the final straw.

As a team that has had some trouble scoring, this is a devastating loss for the Cardinals.

Kentucky Continues to Amaze

Kentucky jumped out to a 30-4 lead en route to a 110-75 curb-stomping of Auburn on Saturday. As if there were still any doubters, the Wildcats have a legitimate chance to finish the entire season undefeated. At the very least, they look primed to finish out the regular season with a zero in the loss column.

Just an FYI – That quote is not actually real. And by the way, here’s an awesome dunk from Willie Cauley-Stein.

Kevin Pangos Making Headlines

But not for his play. Lost amid Gonzaga’s 17-point comeback win at St. Mary’s was Twitter’s obsession with the Canadian senior’s hair.

In fact, it even drew some comparisons. Marty McFly, anyone?

I hear the kids these days are calling it “flow.”

Quick Hitters

– Virginia’s London Perrantes after a nasty collision with teammate Malcolm Brogdon. That’s a broken nose. Ouch.

-Kansas’ Perry Ellis with a one-handed alley oop in the Jayhawks’ win over TCU

-Here’s another one-handed oop from RaNeal Ewing of Marietta College

-Here’s North Carolina’s JP Tokoto with a two-handed slam in the lane

-Purdue’s Jon Octeus with an absolute posterization of Indiana’s Collin Hartman. Yes, it technically wasn’t last weekend, but it was too good to leave off.

-Perhaps the only play in college basketball to top Cauley-Stein’s windmill last weekend was delivered by Jarell Martin. He did not just do that in a game…
