General News

  • Steve Adams Heading to America Soon: “Well, I won’t bury the lead in this. In a story that gushes over Steven Adams is this big, big nugget. ‘Adams is set to graduate High School in New Zealand at the end of this year and will then transfer to Notre Dame Prep for the 2011-12 season to gain some American high school experience. He becomes eligible to play for Pittsburgh in 2012-13.'” (Pitt Blather)
  • Mark Emmert Says “Thanks But No Thanks” To Pay For Play: The NCAA president opposes the proposed pay for play ideas. (Kentucky Sports Radio)
  • Villanova Loses to Senegal 69-64: “The Villanova Wildcats opened their summer playing tour in Europe with a loss to the #36 ranked (FIBA) Senegal National Team, 69-64 in a game played in suburban Paris.” (Villanova by the Numbers and VU Hoops)
  • Cal Men’s Basketball Scrimmage Highlights: Video clips and impressions from the scrimmage. (California Golden Blogs)
  • Cal Basketball Non-Conference Schedule Features UNLV, SDSU, Georgia: “Whether through luck or planning, Mike Montgomery’s Bears have faced an unusually tough non-conference schedule over the last two years. 2010-11 included eventual top seeds Kansas, Notre Dame and San Diego State. In 2009-10 Cal had Ohio St., Syracuse, Kansas and New Mexico. Both sets of tough schedules were mixed blessings – Cal generally had solid RPI and strength of schedule numbers, but they also suffered a number of early losses that seemed to damage Cal’s national reputation – for whatever that’s worth. For better or worse, that almost certainly won’t be the case next year.” (California Golden Blogs)

Recruiting

  • UNC Picks Up 2013 Commit: “Record time from offer to commitment? Isaiah Hicks, 6-7 power forward from Raleigh, NC committed to UNC this evening roughly two hours after receiving an offer from Roy Williams during a visit to Chapel Hill.” (Tar Heel Fan)
  • Is It Decision Time For Drummond?: “As Kentucky continues to wait and see if Kaleb Tarczewski will pop by sometime this month for a visit before making a decision, Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News says that it’s just about time for another five-star big man to make a decision of his own.  For Andre Drummond, the nation’s best big man, however, the choice is between heading to prep school or directly to college as a member of the 2011 class.” (Kentucky Sports Radio)
  • Mitch McGary Trims List to Six: “Dave Telep is reporting that 2012 big man Mitch McGary has narrowed his list to just six schools: Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan, Duke and Kentucky.” (UM Hoops and Testudo Times)
  • D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera Plans an MSU Visit: “D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, an Indiana combo guard rated a five-star by both Scout and Rivals, is planning an unofficial visit this month and is interested in taking an official as well.” (The Only Colors)
  • Chris Walker Still Waiting On Kentucky To Offer: “When the July evaluation period kicked off, one of the hot 2013 names for Kentucky fans was Chris Walker, a 6′10″ power forward rated by Rivals as the #3 overall player in his class. He famously slept through Calipari’s phone call when the recruiting period kicked off in June and said back around Christmas that the Cats were #1 on his list. Since then, John Calipari has been keeping tabs on him and his Florida Rams teammates, two of whom earned scholarship offers last month. Walker, however, hasn’t received a scholarship offer yet and is still singing the same tune.” (Kentucky Sports Radio)
  • Yogi Ferrell shines on final night of adidas Nations: “Adidas’ final grassroots event of the summer, adidas Nations, wrapped up Monday evening at Cal State Dominguez in Carson, California in front of a national television audience on the CBS Sports Network. For Indiana fans, the broadcast was a chance to check out three of the Hoosiers’ verbal commitments — Jeremy Hollowell, Kevin “Yogi” Ferrell and Trey Lyles — for a final time until next winter.” (Inside the Hall: Recap and Highlights)
