You can always control for more and the noise IS likely drowning things out. Tempo, however, is unlikely to be the culprits: I was using rebounding percentages to account for that very same concern.

I know at least a few coaches seem to heavily emphasize getting back over offensive boards (Wisconsin comes to mind, though to start this year they crashed the board oddly well) and it does seem to work for them.

The problem with showing a difference is there’s not only a wider range of talent among NCAA teams, but a wide range of tempos as well, though the tempo range is of course affected by offensive rebounding-choices. Excepting a few teams (D’Antoni teams, and maybe the spurs at the other end), the range of tempos is not very large in the NBA.

Mind you, I’m talking anecdotally here, so I could be wrong in fact. But it just seems like any real effect here, despite your best efforts, is being taken away by noise.
