68!!!

Has there ever been a non-prime number so beautiful as this one?

The NCAA made the right decision, from its release this afternoon:

Late Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee unanimously passed a recommendation to the Division I Board of Directors to increase tournament field size to 68 teams beginning with the 2011 Championship. The recommendation will be reviewed by the Division I Board of Directors at its April 29 meeting.

Much more later…

  • Great news! I hope this means play ins for the last at large spots (has been my hope since the addition of the 65th team) instead of low level conference champions playing for the 16 seeds.

    • I reiterate a tweet from SI's Luke Winn: I wonder if this means a quadruple-header in Dayton? That'd be pretty cool.

  • To answer the question of another non-prime number as beautiful, I stubbornly answer 64. I know we're never going back, but it is still the right answer.

  • I with JR on this one. last 8 at-large teams play in the opening round games. If you win your conference tournament you should be given the "real" experience.

  • Hooray! At this point, I don't care what they do with those four play-in games, the fact that we are saved from the 96-team abomination, however temporarily, is good news enough.

Although, that being said, if there is a quadruple-header in Dayton featuring the eight bubble teams fighting for a chance to advance, that might actually be a really interesting day of basketball. And if it is Mississippi Valley State vs. Robert Morris X 4, well, then I can continue ignoring that whole day like I have in the past.

  • Bad move. The first one out usually refers to themselves as the 65th team. Now it's... you know, the 69th team.
