Looking back on it, the moment that really got me into college basketball was the Bryce Drew shot in 1998. Absolutely no connection to Valparaiso but there was just something about it that captured the mind of little 11 year old me.
There wasn’t a moment that captured my interest in Seton Hall, my team. Rather, it was a season. The 1999-2000 season was our first with season tickets and the year that the 10th seeded Pirates upset #7 Oregon and #2 Temple to reach the Sweet 16, a height they have not reached in the subsequent 10 seasons. I guess the moment there would have to be the coast to coast drive by Shaheen Holloway to beat Oregon, 10 years ago this very day, or Ty Shine’s incredible performance off the bench for an injured Holloway against John Chaney’s Temple Owls. The Sweet 16 game in Syracuse against Oklahoma State was a great one and I sometimes wonder what would have happened if they pulled it off. Could they have beaten 5th seeded Florida (who made the Final Four) in the regional final? I like to think they would have.
It’s a shame they haven’t come close to that since. Now today, 10 years after Holloway, hope springs eternal in this loyal fan’s mind after one of the program’s darkest hours.
