I was just thinking about this topic this morning, and I can't even remember why the thought crossed my mind. Anyway, after a brief argument with myself, I landed on this: I love the fact that I got to see Kevin Love and Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant and the like play, even if for only a year. I rarely watch the NBA, so without the chance to see those guys play in college, I would have missed them entirely.

I still think the rule is a travesty and agree with the idea that the kids should have the opportunity to go to the NBA after high school, but if they decide to pass over that opportunity, they won't be eligible for the draft again for three years.

I agree with J Stevens and having been saying this for a few years. The MLB model works well. If they want to take the chance, let them but then make them stay. If not, make them stay at least three years and at least force them to get three years of an education. Plus, I think this will encourage many to stay that extra one year to get that degree.

G. Floyd, college baseball does have a very different approach from basketball, and it does keep kids around, but I don't know if it really makes student-athletes out of anyone. The number of players in major league baseball with a college degree is 24--that's less than one guy per team. For many of the top college programs, it is not unheard of to have graduations of 0% in a given year. I don't know if that's the answer to the problem.

I feel it's a pretty easy situation to handle, college baseball has been doing it right for years. If kids want to forgo their college eligibilty after high school for the NBA Draft then let them go, but once they sign with a school you should not be eligible for the draft until after your Junior year in college. This allows for athletes in college to actually be STUDENT athletes. It is a shame that many of of the schools waste a 1-year scholarship on someone who isn't going to recieve the full benefit of a college education. Congrats to college baseball and the MLB for doing it right!

If all of you are "editor/contributor", then do you really need to make the distinction?
