Haha, guess you have a point there, Ben. Although for my money, the issue gets muddled with college basketball’s refusal to use the NBA block/charge line under the basket. That would clean up so much of the mess (the “Duke” rule) of people camping out under there waiting on a player to fly into them on a layup, but it does create other problems with respect to players standing on the line and going to the replay to make sure the call was right, etc.

We’ll see how the NCAA point of emphasis works this year, and revisit this in the offseason. I’m skeptical, but maybe the refs will start using their judgment (!!!) to get it right.

Except in CIS, of course.

Did I learn to take charges in HS? Yes.
Have I used this skill to effect during rec league? Yes.
Do I think the charge is a good, fundamental rule to basketball? No.

I mean, it’s nice to get the call (sometimes however, you get highlight reels that look like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXNJQFi_R50), but wouldn’t you rather see a guy go for the block or move his feet well to go for the strip? Wouldn’t that be 100% more entertaining than watching a tiny amount of contact inducing bodies to fly everywhere?

In my opinion, the charge rule is a necessary evil to watching basketball.
