Nothing to panic over, though. If you’re a program that has a run of a few good years, more kids want to play for you, and in the business of recruiting, talent is overrated more often than it’s underrated anyway. This would seemingly lead to more young players being lost in the shuffle and therefore more transfers. Unfortunate for the kids, though.

This seems to be how it was at Florida for Jai Lucas (who Calathes was rumored to be abusing at every turn — again, rumor) and Vargas, who looked fairly clueless last year. Despite being highly touted recruits they haven’t been good fits.

Good short piece about this at the Orlando Sentinel today (http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/sports_college_uf/2009/08/eloy-vargas-no-longer-a-gator.html). I don’t know if Vargas’ visiting Kentucky is a point in the right direction, either; with the presumed upgrade in talent that the Wildcats have made since Calipari’s arrival, seems like they’d have little motivation to bring in a player who hasn’t shown much at this level, and I doubt Calipari would want to make Kentucky into some sort of haven for lost players. I’ll have to dig deeper and see what I find regarding whether or not UK is interested.

Thanks for the comment — I’m always interested in why players leave, too.

(UPDATE: Two Kentucky sports blogs (John Clay’s Sidelines http://johnclay.bloginky.com/2009/08/22/report-floridas-elroy-vargas-is-visiting-kentucky/ and Kentucky Sports Radio http://kentuckysportsradio.com/index.php?s=eloy+vargas) have mentioned that Vargas’ Kentucky visit was done with encouragement of the coaching staff; hmmm…planning for the future for when Patterson goes and if Cousins is a one-and-done?)

UF has had more transfers than any other school in recent history. What’s the deal?

I mean, huh?
