Checking in on the… Mountain West

Jordan Freemyer is the RTC correspondent for the Mountain West and Big Sky Conferences.

It has been a relatively quiet week in the Mountain West, with most teams having a light schedule due to finals. Three teams did manage to go 2-0 on the week, and they get the spotlight this week.

Current Standings:

  1. BYU (10-0)
  2. Wyoming (8-1)
  3. UNLV (9-2)
  4. Air Force (7-2)
  5. San Diego State (7-3)
  6. New Mexico (7-4)
  7. TCU (7-4)
  8. Utah (5-4)
  9. Colorado State (3-7)

Wyoming improved to 8-1 on the season this week with wins over Northern Iowa and Division II Western State. Guard Brandon Ewing averaged 21.5 points in the Cowboys’ two games this week. Forward Tyson Johnson averaged a double-double this week with 14 points and 10.5 boards per game.

This week’s schedule:

  • Saturday vs Sacramento State
  • Tuesday at UCLA


New Mexico
extended their winning streak to four with a blowout of Ole Miss and a win over Oral Roberts this week, taking their overall record to 7-4. Senior Tony Danridge averaged 18.5 points in the Lobos’ wins this week. Forward Daniel Faris was key inside for New Mexico this week, averaging 17 points and seven rebounds. The Lobos have a big game this week, when they face in-state rival New Mexico State on Tuesday.

  • Saturday at Texas Tech
  • Tuesday vs New Mexico State


UNLV
has a four-game winning streak of their own, and the Runnin’ Rebels are 9-2 this season. Guard Wink Adams averaged 17 points in his two games this week, and is averaging 14.2 points per game this season, which leads the team. Senior Rene Rougeau has been a dual threat in the Rebels’ backcourt recently, averaging 13 points and 7 rebounds this week.

  • Tuesday vs Southern Utah
