Lost in the final in o.t. to Cincinatti

That was an excellent UK team, but even if they’d won the title, it wouldn’t have been considered an all-time great team like the others. More along the lines of 94 Arkansas, 95 UCLA or 04 UConn as examples.

While that 2003 Kentucky team was very good and often forgotten, I don’t think it was ever really considered an all-time great team. Some of that may be that it lacked a true superstar (Bogans was 3rd team AA) or early season hype (starting 6-3 didn’t help), but I don’t remember ever watching that team and thinking I was watching one of the greatest teams ever. In fact, they weren’t even heavy favorites going into the tournament (29-3 vs. Arizona’s 25-3) and they only climbed to #1 in the AP poll when Arizona lost its first round game in the Pac-10 tournament. Maybe some day, one of us will write a column about teams that are forgotten historically, but I think rtmsf was going for teams that everyone thought would go down in the history books that didn’t make it there. Unfortunately, I think the 2003 Wildcat team falls into the former category.

Tue, 09 Dec 2008 18:32:07 +0000http://rushthecourt.net/?p=2867#comment-1219Add 2003 Kentucky to that list. 32-4 overall, 16-0 in the SEC, SEC Tournament champions, #1 overall seed…and Keith Bogans gets an ankle injury against Wisconsin and the next game in the tournament they run up against a buzzsaw that is Dwyane Wade.

Mon, 08 Dec 2008 17:59:27 +0000http://rushthecourt.net/?p=2867#comment-1225Marcus – we thought about including the 1994 UNC team, but the truth is that team was a greater collection of talent than actual team. They had six regular season losses and any observer could tell that there were chemistry issues between the talented freshmen you mentioned and the upperclassmen who were returning the core of a national championship team.

Mon, 08 Dec 2008 17:47:45 +0000http://rushthecourt.net/?p=2867#comment-1224What an awesome list. I was wondering about the 1994 UNC team that returned almost everyone from the ’93 championship and had added freshman Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse.
